The Story Begins

It all started because my suitcase didn’t make it to Billings with me. I stood there and waited until everyone else had gotten theirs, then went over to the luggage desk to file a report. They thought it would be there the next day and promised to deliver it to my girlfriend’s parent’s ranch.

So, one day, no big deal. I figured I could just wear the same clothes for a day, or worst case go buy a few things, like toothpaste or underpants, if I needed to. Betsy was outside waiting for me, wondering what took me so long. I explained and she said no worries, that I could just borrow some of her things.

You don’t mind wearing my jeans do you? she asked as we pulled out.

Not if they fit.

I’m sure I have a baggy pair for you. In any event, I wasn’t all that big, and was certainly skinny. There was no way I would be able to borrow her Father’s stuff, he was much bigger.

The airport was outside of town, and we were headed in the opposite direction, so there was no cause to go into town…so we drove away, and that was that. I hadn’t realised how far from the city their ranch was, but it was only two and a half hours later that we pulled off the main road and onto a dirt road marked private property.

It was the summer after high school graduation, and we were both heading off to college in the fall. Not the same college, but two close to each other, so we figured we could see each other on weekends. That was also part of the reason why our parents let me come out and stay. Not that mine would mind, but hers might have if they weren’t more liberal than my own parents, and thought it would be nice for Betsy to have her high school sweetheart around before heading off to college.

Her parents were cool. Friendly, welcoming, happy to see me, eager to make me feel at home. They commiserated on the suitcase thing, and thought it would be there the next day. The only thing old fashioned about it all, was that Betsy and I had to have separate rooms…not that this would make any practical difference, as there was going to be plenty of sneaking about, but it did preserve the illusion of propriety.

The next morning, one practical matter asserted itself: underwear. I said I would just wear the same ones again. She said that’s gross. I shrugged, as if to say what else can I do.

You can wear some of mine, she said.

I don’t know…

Don’t be such a prude, she said, going to get some, anyway, who is going to know except you and me?
