If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.

    - Maya Angelou

    CHAPTER 1

I opened the door to my apartment and threw down the heavy laptop bag that I’d been carrying on my shoulder. It was a relief to feel its weight leave my body. My back had already been aching from the plastic chair that I had been forced to sit in at the nail bar. I tried to pull my cell phone out of my jeans pocket, but my freshly manicured nails were making it difficult. God, I thought to myself, why did I always do this? Why did I get manicures when they left me without the use of my hands for an eternity?

I managed to get a hold of my phone and pulled it out. The little LED light at the top was flashing red. I jabbed at the screen with my finger. The sound of my false nails hitting the glass filled the room and for a moment, I wondered how on earth I was going to unlock the phone if it wouldn’t respond to the nail jabbing that I was offering. I finally managed to angle my finger so its tip touched the glass and the screen lit up.

I had a voicemail from my mom. She’d called when I was getting my nails done, not that I’d heard it at the time, not that I would have answered the call if I had.
