    CHAPTER 1

    Objectives & Goals

    You can’t make plans to accomplish anything until you’ve set an objective and goals. Each unique objective calls for a different plan of action and associated goals to help guide you.

    How is an objective different from a goal? These two words are often used interchangeably but are in fact very different. There are many books written about what an objective is versus what a goal is, and how to set them. Put simply, an objective is what you are trying to accomplish and a goal is something that gets you closer to accomplishing your objective.

    There are two analogies that I’ll share that help to drive home what an objective is compared to a goal, and what the value is in setting an objective and goals.

    First, let’s consider ice hockey. The objective for an ice hockey team is to win the game. That is the objective—to defeat the other team and win the game. One of the team’s goals is to score as many goals as possible. With each goal met, the team is that much closer to accomplishing the objective of winning the
