About this ebook

Kayla Dunsmore has had her share of heartache. Her husband turned out to be an abusive jerk, she survived cancer, and her family has been ripped from her life by a tragic accident. Now, she's just tired of fighting to survive and is ready for a stroke of good luck. Unfortunately, it's not to be. The last straw comes when, once again, the doctor tells her the grim news: the cancer is back. Not only is it back, but it will take a radical treatment for any hope of survival.

Zarth, an advisor to the goddess Freya, is by himself, the way he likes it. His kind, the Phooka, don't do well in numbers. But the moment he sees Kayla, Zarth doesn't want to be alone anymore. And that's a problem because, according to Freya, the only way to save her is to take her to the planet Amethyst Flames.

The planet is fraught with danger for Kayla, and to compound the issue, Freya tells them that Zarth must share Kayla with his brother Tirian.

Can Kayla handle the transition to a new planet and a new lifestyle? Can Zarth and Tirian learn to share? Or will they burn up in Amethyst Flames?

    Chapter One

A shiver went up her spine. Talk about déjà vu. Once again, she waited for results that could destroy her life. The crème-colored walls blended with dark brown carpet. She took a momentary look over the few people that waited to be seen. All clients who were unfamiliar to her.

    Kayla Dunsmore? the nurse called.

Her hands shook. The magazine she held wavered. She laid it down on the table and gathered her purse. She followed the nurse down the hallway to the doctor’s private office.

God, please don’t let the cancer be back! She pleaded, looking down at the floor while they walked to the office.

The nurse turned to her and pointed to the chair in front of the desk. Please have a seat. Doctor Turns will be here in a moment, the rotund nurse announced before closing the door.

Two years ago, her ex-husband had filed for divorce because of the discovery of her breast cancer. She could still see her pompous ass of an ex smiling, thinking he would get everything from their seven-year nightmare. Boy did the judge surprise him. A small grunt slipped out of her. She took a quick look around the doctor’s office, making sure the door was closed. He had surprised her too. She still couldn’t believe that after seven years of being his human slave, all she had gotten was her car. It had pissed off her louse of an ex that she’d gotten anything at all, the son of a bitch. Kayla was just grateful that they hadn’t had any kids. That would have been a nightmare. When she had gotten her first diagnosis, she’d never imagined it would turn her world upside down the way it had. Now here she sat in the doctor’s office again, two years later, waiting for more test results. At least I’m not a punching bag for him anymore. To think that her breast cancer had been the final straw for her ex. He couldn’t take knowing that he wouldn’t have a slave to wait on him hand and foot.

Where did the time go? Her hands continued to shake as she glimpsed around the sterile white office. Degrees from Harvard Medical School hung on the wall. A thick folder with her name on it lay on the doctor’s desk.

Hello, Kayla. Dr. Turns walked into the office. He took her hand in his. Sorry about the wait. He sat down in his swivel chair behind the big oak desk, grabbed her thick chart and scanned it, flipping the pages back and forth. Taking a deep breath, he closed the file. His gaze lifted to hers.

I’m afraid it’s not good. With a lowered voice, he explained, The cancer has spread to your other breast. We have also found two tumors in your cervix.

Her shoulders drooped under a wave of defeat, and her chest clenched from her increased respiration. Blood rushed to her face. Are you sure? There couldn’t be a mistake? Her stomach ached almost like someone had just kicked her. Her hands trembled so badly that the Kleenex she had held upon entering the doctor’s office ripped in half. What will I have to do?

I’ve received your test results from two different specialists. They both agree that we need to perform a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy. Dr. Turns leaned forward. We recommend you start radiation and chemotherapy right after the surgeries. I’d like to schedule them for next week.

Kayla sat back in stunned disbelief. This time it was real, not the nightmare that had plagued her dreams for the last week while she waited for the results. It hit her hard. The damned cancer had returned!

Tears blurred her vision. Oh, my God, this can’t be happening again. Sobs racked her body, rendering her unable to speak. She took a deep breath when the hiccups erupted. Can I call you tomorrow—so we can set up—the dates? I need time to digest—everything. Her stomach began to rebel, and saliva built in her mouth. Her breakfast threatened to come back up.

God, could she do it again? The needles, being sick, the pain, and losing her hair again. Kayla could still feel the chemo going in from her first treatment. The cold medicine slid through her veins as the IV slowly dripped into her. That night, she had been so sick she slept next to the toilet with her blanket and pillow. Every time blessed sleep would come, her stomach would wake her up retching, leaving her with barely enough time to reach the commode.

Through all of this, she had been alone. She reached up, touching the wig she wore. Her hair had just started to grow back.
