    Chapter One

The beeping of machines, the smell of disinfectant, and sickness threatened to drown her in the horrors of her past, but Matty’s voice anchored her, which she kind of hated to admit. He slowly brought Storm back to reality and pain. That is when she remembered the concert and the explosion.

Storm had covered a child’s little body then pain. If she were full pixy, like most believed, Storm would have been able to heal herself, but that was obvious it didn’t happen. Did Matty and Nolen know her secret? She listened, not moving to listen to them speak to each other as she tried to figure out where she was and how bad it was.

I know you’re awake, Storm. Open those beautiful green eyes, baby, Matty whispered, leaning down, he placed a kiss on her cheek.

The back of her head throbbed, but as she opened her eyes, Storm wasn’t expecting the light to blind her and a sharp pain to shoot through her skull.

Light, her voice cracked as she tried to cover her eyes with her arm but was stopped by the pull of the tubes and stuff connected to her arms.

Easy, little lady, don’t pull your IVs out, Nolan said, taking her arm and lowering it to the bed. The lights are down low. How much pain are you in?

Well, if I was human... Wait, I am part human... Crap, she moaned, hating her big mouth. Whenever in pain, Storm always did shout out what she had been thinking without thinking about it.

Pain, yes, pain... Headache from hell and those little beeps on the machines don’t help, she whimpered, her mouth was dry. Water?

You’re allowed some ice chips, but that is about it, my little pixy, Matty said, and she sighed.

I’m not your anything yet, Matty, she mumbled around a piece of ice he gave her. How many were hurt? Storm asked, her headache starting to fade, which was weird. Okay, which one of you is healing the headache?

We won’t allow you to be in pain if we can help, Nolan said. And you are ours.

Storm ignored his statement as Doc Lope came in followed by what she thought was another doctor. Storm, finally you are awake. You gave us a big scare there, young lady. He pushed Nolan out of the way, reaching in, squeezing her hand and placing a kiss on the top of her head.

Nolan growled, glaring at her adopted father.

Doc Lope glanced over his shoulder at Nolan, and Storm laughed-moaned at the same time knowing the look he was giving Nolan. Don’t do that, she said.

What? Doc Lope asked, turning back to her with an innocent face.

You know what, giving Nolan that look you give to anyone who questions you. I’ve seen it enough times over the years, she said, and he just winked at her while taking her pulse.

The other man moved over to where Matty was and tried to get by him, but he, too, growled, refusing to leave her side.

Back up, Matty, now. This is Doctor Keyys. He’s the one who did the operation on Storm’s head. If it weren’t for him, she wouldn’t be here right now. Even I couldn’t save my little girl this time.

Matty grumbled but stepped back as the doctor stepped in and smiled down at her. How do you feel? I have to say, when Doc Lope called me in, I was amazed you were still alive. I couldn’t believe you were actually talking. Can you lean your head down? he asked.

She frowned at the doctor, not liking him instantly. His scent was off, and the way he acted was strange. Just what he said about her being dead wasn’t right. She leaned her head down but glanced over at Doc Lope, and he, too, was frowning at Doctor Keyys. He started to unwind bandages from her head.

Sorry, we had to cut all that purple hair away, but you had splinters of wood in your head we needed to remove, he told her, his cold fingers running over her scalp, pushing on a certain spot on her head had her yanking away from him.

That hurt, damn it, and you cut all of it? Storm felt the tears start to form, and she closed her eyes as she reached up and found that she was totally bald.

Sorry, but I need to see if there is any infection. As I said earlier, you are lucky to be alive. Your hair will grow back. The doctor stepped back, frowning down at her. I’m going to leave the bandages off for now. You are healing nicely.

Storm didn’t know what was going on, but she was getting a really bad vibe from this guy, and as soon as he left, leaving Doc Lope, Storm glanced at him. Where did you find him? I have to say, Doc, he just isn’t... there is something off about him. Were you in the operating room with him?

Doc Lope nodded, frowning at the door. Yes, he might be good at what he does, but he still does not understand the other half of you. His bedside manner needs some improvement also, but he is right on the hair. It will grow back, Storm. Plus, you know there are tons of different wigs you could wear ‘til then. He patted her arm.

It’s not the same, and you know it, Storm said, leaning back. Do you think I could get something to drink now?

I’ll have the nurse order up some coffee and a liquid diet for now. Doc Lope moved to the door and stopped, looking over his shoulder.

Matty, a word with you and Nolan, please, he said, stepping outside.

Hey, you can talk in front of me, Storm said.

Rest, Storm, and that is an order, Doc Lope growled at her, and she stuck her tongue out at him.

You’re lucky I love you, old man, she mumbled and curled up but not before her favorite blanket covered her.

Don’t do that again, young lady. You’ve been through a major trauma to your body. You need to build up your strength. No more magic for the next day at least, he ordered, going out into the hallway followed by Nolan and Matty.

No magic? Please, Storm mumbled but had to admit she was now very tired. She closed her eyes, curling up in her blanket and flinching when she tried to move. Yep, this was a fine mess. She really did hate hospitals, too many bad memories that wouldn’t go away. Not to mention pain mentally and physically sometimes.

    * * * *

Nolan Moree followed his mate Matty and their Doc Lope out of Storm’s room. He had found his mates in one day to almost lose one in an explosion from some frantic group that was now on his family’s list to be destroyed.

He glanced over his shoulder at Storm as she cuddled with the old blanket as the door slowly closed from her room. What is this about you knowing more? Do we need to hunt someone? Nolan asked, turning to face Doc Lope.

Follow me. We will not speak of this out where everyone can hear us, Doc Lope said and lead them to a nearby room, shutting the door when they entered it. He turned to stare at both men. You are her mates?

    Matty
