SHE IS AT THE EDGE OF A PRECIPICE, AND SHE KNEW NOTHING

THE WOMAN WITHOUT A PAST

When she woke up, she remembers nothing. She has nothing with her except her clothes and a Bible. She knows no one, the cops are waiting to ask questions about things she doesn’t know about, and she is having bad dreams that she suspects to be her memories trying to return. So the gracious, kind and handsome doctor who takes care of her is a real blessing.

Finally given the temporary name of Ruth, Dr. Richard Hayle tries to help her recover her memory by employing Dr. Julie Greene to perform hypnosis on her. At the same time, she and Richard are drawn to each other in ways that are more than professional.

But she still has to contend with dreams that are fast becoming sinister. The cops have found a dead woman in the woods near where she was recovered and they seem to believe the answers they are seeking are locked with the memories inside her head.

Does she? Ruth wants to help. But what if recovering those answers will mean harming herself?

EXCERPT

“I can't begin to imagine what you must be feeling right now, but you'll have to trust me when I say that we're going to do everything in our power to get you back to being you again. Now, my name is Dr. Hayle. If you have any questions and I’m not around, just let one of your nurses know and they will page me.”

“I’ll do that,” she said. As she listened to him speaking, she focused on his voice once again. It was so sweet and caring, but there was also a toughness underneath all of that—a rough edge that told her that she was in strong, capable hands.

“Now,” Dr. Hayle said, “I’m afraid I'm going to have to switch gears here for a minute. There's a bit of unpleasant business that needs to be taken care of, and given you current state of recovery, I think it's time we get it over with.”

“That doesn’t sound promising,” she said. As she waited for him to continue, she tried to think of what this unpleasant business might be. Outside of her memory and whatever trauma had been done to her head, she was pretty sure she had no injuries. Was there perhaps something more they needed to tell her—something they didn’t want to burden her with until she was fully coherent?

“The police have been waiting patiently to ask you a few questions,” Dr. Hayle said. “And I think it's time we gave them their chance. I don't want you to worry about it. I'm going to stay with you the entire time.”

The police? Why would the police want to talk to her? The thought sent a spiral of panic through her and the gash on her head seemed to thrum in response.

“Is that okay?” Dr. Hayle asked.

She nodded and found herself wanting to reach out and take his hand.

Rachel Gilberts

Rachel Gilberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee - her hometown, then and now. She works as a Humanities professor and as a freelance self-published Christian book author. Her parents are Frank and Jemimah. Frank, now deceased, supported the family by tending their family farm while Jemimah worked as a local bookshop supervisor. Jemimah, now retired, helps supervise work at the farm. Rachel has three other siblings – Ruth, aged 42, and twins John and Jacob, both 36. Ruth, husband Paul, and daughter Martha now tend to the farm. John, still single, is a civil engineer, while Jacob, now married to college sweetheart Marie, is a hotel front desk manager. Rachel has a child named Maryanne, aged 12, by her husband, Keith. Keith was once a one-hit country singer but is now a comptroller at an insurance and financial services company. Rachel and Keith parted ways for “personal differences." Rachel, as alleged by Keith, is content with “small town” life, and he is not. Custody is not an issue as Keith participates actively in raising Maryanne.

    Chapter One

I THINK SHE'S coming around now.

This was a disembodied voice that sounded like it was coming from deep inside a cave. It was reassuring yet terrifying at the same time.

The police are still waiting to question her, came another equally distant voice. Should I bring them in?

No, the first voice replied. I don't care about their questions. This girl has suffered severe trauma and I won't allow any non-medical staff in here until I'm confident she's ready.

The sound of a steady electric ping filled the world for a moment and then she opened her eyes. The light in the room was blinding and painful. When she winced from it, her head began to ache. She caught flickering shapes behind her lids as her eyes adjusted. The light, the shapes...she wondered if maybe she was really dead and seeing angels.

    She smiled at the thought.

Easy now, came a gentle voice, this one closer and somehow more real. Nice and slow. You have all the time in the world.

As her vision began to swim back into focus, the pinging sound increased in frequency and seemed to match the pounding in her temples. Slowly, she started to piece together her surroundings. It was clear that she was in a hospital bed. The comforting voice she'd heard seemed to belong to a man in medical scrubs worn under a long white coat. He was standing to her right, looking down at her with big reassuring eyes. She assumed that he must be her doctor and that the other voice she'd heard belonged to the nurses that she could see outlined near the doorway.

A Bible sat on a table by the bed. She couldn't be certain but she thought it was her mother's. It certainly looked like the old worn Bible that her mother had once read passage upon passage from, quoting it around the house for all to hear.

What had her favorite always been? Something about angels...

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Yeah, that was it. From Psalms.

She smiled thinly. It was funny the places your mind went as you arose from pain and darkness. She pushed that scripture aside and tried to find other features about the room, but the lights were too bright to really discern anything else.

Finally, her eyes came back around to where she had started looking. Her gaze fell on the doctor.

Welcome back, the doctor said. You've had a bit of an accident, and you've been brought to Paradise Cove Hospital. When you came into the emergency room, you had a wound on your head and we were concerned that you might have sustained a concussion.

The pinging sound kept ringing in her ears. She slowly turned her head to locate the source. Next to the bed she saw a small box with a screen showing a jagged line tracing its way along a series of blips.

My heartbeat, she thought, panicking. It's too fast....

It was true; her heart rate was surging wildly as panic started to truly grip her.

The doctor started to speak again and when he did, she tried to focus on his voice-calm and reassuring, strong and confident. Nurse, he
