HER MEMORIES ARE BACK!

SHE REMEMBERS WHY SHE RAN

Ruth lost her memory before she was taken to a hospital, so she doesn't know what really happened to her in the woods where she was found. She eventually learns that her real name is Raine, and she starts to remember parts of her past with the help of hypnosis -- family members, milestone events as she grew up... and a little about a fiancé named is Jim.

This hinders her budding relationship with the handsome, kind and charming Dr. Richard Hayle. A devout Christian, he isn’t going to have anything to do with her while she’s committed to someone she can’t even fully remember.

On the other hand, why is it that of all her memories, remembering Jim is proving to be the most difficult? Is it just a physical malady that will heal soon? Or is her subconscious trying to protect her from something much bigger than a simple lost memory of another guy in her life?

And what about the serial killer that the cops are hunting which they thought she can help them with? If only she can remember what everything else that she has forgotten, including the young woman found dead in the woods where she was recovered!

EXCERPT

“There can't be any 'us' now,” he said. His tone was firm, but she sensed hesitation beneath the words.

“Richard, I don't have any feelings for this... this Jim person. I don't know him and there are no emotions tied to my memories of him. What I do know is that I feel something for you, and right now that's about the only thing I have to hold onto in this world. Forget your job, forget what happened this morning, and look at me. Don't you feel anything for me?”

“You know I do.”

“Then kiss me.”

“It’s not fair that you tempt me like that,” he said. “Look...once we really unwrap those memories of yours, you’ll start to remember who Jim is and how you feel for him. I won’t cross a line and have a relationship with another man’s soon-to-be wife.”

She looked down to the floor, surprised at just how much she was growing to despise this Jim. She wanted Richard so badly that she was willing to risk ruining what could be an incredible relationship with Jim. Standing there, she would have given up just about anything.

“Fine,” she said. “I understand that. But what happens to me if everything on the MRI comes out clearly?”

“That’s up to you. I can discreetly loan you some money to stay at a hotel. Or there is my house by the beach that I don’t really stay in much these days. I could let you stay there until you start to pick the pieces back up.”

Something about the thought of living in a house that Richard called his own made her giddy. She suppressed it, though, and only nodded.“Thanks,” she said and started for the door.

“Raine,” he said. “Please don’t be like this.”

“It’s okay,” she said. “I just need to sort this all out.”

“Let me know if there’s anything I can do,” Richard said.

“I just did,” she said sadly.

Rachel Gilberts

Rachel Gilberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee - her hometown, then and now. She works as a Humanities professor and as a freelance self-published Christian book author. Her parents are Frank and Jemimah. Frank, now deceased, supported the family by tending their family farm while Jemimah worked as a local bookshop supervisor. Jemimah, now retired, helps supervise work at the farm. Rachel has three other siblings – Ruth, aged 42, and twins John and Jacob, both 36. Ruth, husband Paul, and daughter Martha now tend to the farm. John, still single, is a civil engineer, while Jacob, now married to college sweetheart Marie, is a hotel front desk manager. Rachel has a child named Maryanne, aged 12, by her husband, Keith. Keith was once a one-hit country singer but is now a comptroller at an insurance and financial services company. Rachel and Keith parted ways for “personal differences." Rachel, as alleged by Keith, is content with “small town” life, and he is not. Custody is not an issue as Keith participates actively in raising Maryanne.

    Chapter One

RAINE WASN'T SURE if the hypnosis was really helping but both Richard and Julie thought that it was worthwhile, so she agreed to go under again. They both wanted to try something a little different this time.

According to Julie, with all of the difficulty she'd been having with the killer's identity, there might be some progress if they were able to successfully take her back in the hopes of uncovering some part of her identity.

It's your sixth birthday, prompted Dr. Greene as Raine lay on the couch. You're there with all your family and friends. It's time to open your presents, and everyone is gathered around you. Tell me what you see.

They're all here, Raine said in a far away and dreamy voice. I see my mom and dad. I know them now, I can see their faces. And my friends are here too. Jenny, Sarah, Ashley, and Donna. There are other faces, but I can't see them clearly. I don't remember. I'm opening presents now. There's a doll, my favorite mystery books, and a big gift. It's all wrapped in brown paper, and I'm being so careful opening it. Oh! My dollhouse! I used to love playing with it.

Richard and Julie exchanged a look. Dr. Greene was more accustomed to hearing her patients relive forgotten moments as though they'd only just happened, but Richard was amazed at the detail Raine could recall from an event that must have been nearly twenty years ago.

That's great, Raine, Dr. Greene continued. We're going to move forward now. Time is moving quickly and everything around you is changing. Your friends are changing, your parents are changing, you're getting older.

Raine smiled as she sees this happening. I can see it all. My first day of high school. The time I got in trouble because I stayed out too late and got drunk with Ashley. My senior prom. I remember Ryan! He was my boyfriend and that night we got a hotel room and...

Even in the depth of hypnosis, her cheeks flushed red and she was too embarrassed to continue her thought.

How about after high school? What's happening now?

"I'm at a funeral. I had to come home from college, and I'm so sad. It's my parents and they're both dead from a car accident. I'm all alone
