AND IN THE WAKE OF THE STORM, LIFE CONTINUES
HE IS THE SAFE HARBOR AFTER THE TEMPEST

In the wake of the storm that only passed the Keys but did no harm to its residents, Joy finds herself on an adventure she has not gone on before—finding romance that she feels will make or break every good thing she believes about love, and how much she deserves it.

Derrick is slowly proving to be a safe harbor after the storm left by Brian and Stormy’s betrayal, and the short time of being in his company has made her happier than she has ever been with Brian or any other time in her life. She doesn’t know where the new experience is taking her, but she is willing to let him stir the sails.

As Joy and Derrick find their way into the turbulent waves, others struggle to find their place. Stormy isn’t sure receiving Brian into her home is a good idea. In trying to find a woman he meets online, Joe may have stumbled upon someone who is right for him. Kevin has fallen into dangerous waters. And three Arab brothers are on a skydiving mission, a mission that is more than what it appears to be....

EXCERPT
In Florida, it could be raining in your front yard and be sunny and dry just across the street at your neighbor’s house. Mother Nature never gave any reason for her seemingly random decisions. Humans just adapted.

Derrick and Joy had planned very carefully. Every minute of the next few days after Joy’s suddenly becoming single were scheduled to avoid having to directly deal with the emotionality of the real situation. So much had happened in such a short time for both of them that neither was too anxious to jump in and create more drama. Both were content to just relax, enjoy each other’s company and take one day at a time. Maybe not a whole day at a time, but they took it as it unfolded naturally; or as naturally as it could be expected.

Derrick and Joy got on the lower Keys shuttle headed northwards for an excursion to the Dolphin Rescue Center in Marathon. There they had planned to swim with the dolphins. The physical tension between them was palpable. Each knew exactly where the relationship was headed but superstition interceded. Neither of them wanted to blame circumstance for any failure of the relationship. Each knew there was a real chance at a “once in a lifetime” opportunity. Each wanted everything to be correct.

The only issue was that despite everything that had occurred, they still didn’t know each other all that well. Relationships were like hurdle races. In order to win, each hurdle has to be expertly and perfectly cleared before encountering the next hurdle. The winner cleared the most hurdles with the least effort.

The longest lasting relationships survived by clearing the most hurdles.

Author

Rachel Gilberts

Rachel Gilberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee - her hometown, then and now. She works as a Humanities professor and as a freelance self-published Christian book author. Her parents are Frank and Jemimah. Frank, now deceased, supported the family by tending their family farm while Jemimah worked as a local bookshop supervisor. Jemimah, now retired, helps supervise work at the farm. Rachel has three other siblings – Ruth, aged 42, and twins John and Jacob, both 36. Ruth, husband Paul, and daughter Martha now tend to the farm. John, still single, is a civil engineer, while Jacob, now married to college sweetheart Marie, is a hotel front desk manager. Rachel has a child named Maryanne, aged 12, by her husband, Keith. Keith was once a one-hit country singer but is now a comptroller at an insurance and financial services company. Rachel and Keith parted ways for “personal differences." Rachel, as alleged by Keith, is content with “small town” life, and he is not. Custody is not an issue as Keith participates actively in raising Maryanne.

    Chapter One

RIDING THE BUS was a unique experience. Within the confined space of the buses interior existed a microcosm of particular segments of the local society. Everyone on the bus had a story, some more interesting than others, if anyone was motivated to observe and listen.

The KW transit authority of the City of Key West operated the shuttle bus. There were two routes dubbed the pink and the lime routes that ran from Marathon to Key West and back; a distance of about fifty miles. There was a schedule both in printed flier form and in a very complicated web site that once figured out could pin point every bus' exact location and time to any next particular stop. This was a valuable application for the company as the buses themselves were plus or minus 45 minutes on any given route. While not often early, a driver had been known to just speed past a stop and leave potential riders in their wake.

Big Pine was a Florida Deer Refuge. The speed limit was 45 mph during the daylight hours and down to 35 mph at night. Road signs proclaimed Speed kills Key deer. Local Deputies used the speed limitations as a source of continued community financial support. Despite the thriving drug trade of methamphetamine and crack cocaine in the avenues, a seedy mobile home park on Big Pine, speed wasn't killing many, if any, key deer on Big Pine Key. The resident deer population had free roam and control of the key. It was illegal to feed the deer, but that didn't stop half of the elderly retirees that had either moved to Big Pine permanently, or still came for part of every year. The deer broke into garbage bags and rooted through trash leaving messes along any given street. They ate the plants in yards. No flowering or decorative tropical foliage was safe unless enclosed. And to provide enclosure to protect your plants, residents were required to follow a complicated and expense process called ROGO to build anything in the Keys. The Regulations of Growth Ordinance had autonomous control over any structural changes on the Keys.

Cowboy Joe stood 6 foot 4 inches tall and was ruggedly handsome. In cowboy boots, which he wore 97% of the time and a cowboy hat, he looked considerably larger and had the muscle to back it up. He possessed a gentle soul for the most part, but there were some developmental and behavioral quirks that came through the practiced exterior. He had a quick temper and no patience in certain situations.

Joe had graduated high school unable to effectively read or write. It's not that he couldn't have been taught, it was just that no one had taken the time to teach him. Somewhere along the line he made a friend that turned him onto a computer and the internet. Joe was an idiot savant on the computer. Even with his own phonetic spellings and limited reading ability, he could navigate the social sites and run several instant message conversations with different people all over the world at the same time. Actually, his experience on the computer helped him read and spell better, more than all his time in
