EXCERPT
Afterwards, they developed a game they played quietly together. One or the other would look at someone and whisper, “Boy or girl?” The other offered an opinion and they would laugh.

Sometimes, it was real hard to tell the difference.

Joe had told Julie she looked pretty today and Julie blushed. She couldn’t say anything.

“You definitely look like a girl,” he had added.

“You’re silly,” Julie laughed. “I am a girl.”

“Yep,” answered Joe. “A real pretty girl.”

They held hands after that as they walked. Joe walked even taller than his already considerable height and Julie just smiled, blushed and walked next to him, looking at everything in wonderment.

Author

Rachel Gilberts

Rachel Gilberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee - her hometown, then and now. She works as a Humanities professor and as a freelance self-published Christian book author. Her parents are Frank and Jemimah. Frank, now deceased, supported the family by tending their family farm while Jemimah worked as a local bookshop supervisor. Jemimah, now retired, helps supervise work at the farm. Rachel has three other siblings – Ruth, aged 42, and twins John and Jacob, both 36. Ruth, husband Paul, and daughter Martha now tend to the farm. John, still single, is a civil engineer, while Jacob, now married to college sweetheart Marie, is a hotel front desk manager. Rachel has a child named Maryanne, aged 12, by her husband, Keith. Keith was once a one-hit country singer but is now a comptroller at an insurance and financial services company. Rachel and Keith parted ways for “personal differences." Rachel, as alleged by Keith, is content with “small town” life, and he is not. Custody is not an issue as Keith participates actively in raising Maryanne.

    Chapter One

RED SKY IN morning, sailors take warning. Red sky at night is sailor's delight, is an old mariner's saying about the weather.

Saturday dawned a virtual eruption of vibrant colors against the drenched wet background. The rain had stopped, at least for the time being, and the rising sun had promised to dry things up.

Julie's Mom was sitting at the coffee table drinking coffee when Julie got ready to go to work.

That's a little dressy for work, isn't it? Julie wanted to look nice for her date. Go back and change into work clothes.

No time, Ma! Julie yelled as she flew out the door to catch her bus. She was still a half hour early. She didn't mind waiting. She had escaped!

ABDUL HAD ARRANGED to meet Stormy at noon. She had taken today off at Abdul's request to do something. She had looked at the pamphlet he had left, but had only taken a cursory look at it.

She immediately classified it as Arabic Muslim propaganda. The few English words said something about Allah being supreme and loving. Stormy lost it at supreme.

She had given it to Officer Sullivan at Border Control. He had asked questions and had taken the flyer, but didn't seem very interested or concerned. Officer Sullivan gave her his card and wrote a cell phone number on the back.

He advised Stormy to call if she thought of anything else or learned anything else of importance.

Abdul did not stay long or want to have sex when he arrived precisely at 12 o'clock noon at her apartment. She felt it was a little odd that he didn't express any interest
