    PREFACE

T he words written in this book are about a young man named Levi, his friends and family, and his unusual connection with the spiritual realm. This story encompasses God and country, life and death, mysteries and miracles. If you have an itch and can’t itch it, you’ll find solace here among the pages of this book.

Somewhere over the rainbow at the end of a narrow, winding road is a small gate. The secret to finding the key to this mysterious gate is to be discovered by those who seek the never-ending quest for truth. What is the truth? Truth is knowledge. Truth is wisdom. Truth is attainable for those who search and discover the key to the gate.

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7:13–14)

    CHAPTER 1

A soldier must be coming home , thought Levi. Yellow ribbons are all over town—on trees, the streetlights, front porches, and restaurants. Must be someone the folks really respect and love. Levi felt compassion for this soldier, a complete stranger. Can you imagine the surprise when he gets a load of this? Levi was overwhelmed by the sight.

Levi had exited Interstate 80/90 to grab a bite to eat in Chesterton, Indiana, on this warm June evening. Levi, on his way home to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was growing weary. He had started out from Syracuse, New York, that morning. He parked his black 328 Xi BMW in front of what looked to be the locals’ favorite family diner. The light from the front window was warm and inviting. Plenty of cars were parked out front, even this late at night. It was Friday; maybe that explained it—no work for most tomorrow.

As he exited his car, he had to stand for a minute and stretch his strong, muscular legs. They felt cramped from the long drive. He ran a tired hand through his wavy chestnut-brown hair. I need a haircut when I get home. He felt its bulk. He’d been on the road too long this time. He was falling behind on everything.

Once he was seated inside the diner, a waitress came up to him with a dazzling smile on her lips. Her blonde hair was swept back off her face. She had beautiful blue eyes. As he looked up at her with his soft hazel eyes, he pondered, Could this be the love of my life? Am I going to find her here in Indiana of all places? Then he looked at her ring finger, and yep, it never failed; she was married. That was how it always seemed to go. She took his order—a burger and fries. He just didn’t feel like eating healthy right now. Forget the salad.

As he listened to the conversations around him, he realized tomorrow was the big day. Jim—apparently the soldier who was coming home—would arrive on Saturday afternoon. Jill, the soldier’s gal, kept coming up in conversation. They were laughing and carrying on like school children. Too bad Levi would never get to meet this local hero. He’d be long gone before noon.

The American soldier, Jim, was only four years old when he had fallen in love with the elusive Jill. Jimmy would come over to Jill’s after preschool and knock on her front door.

Can Jill come out and play?

Jill, in her pretty blue shorts and pink top, would crawl behind her daddy’s big blue leather La-Z-Boy recliner and hide. Jill’s mother would always invite Jimmy in for some chocolate chip cookies and milk. In time Jill would come out of hiding and join them at the kitchen table.

As the years passed, Jill and Jimmy became inseparable. They sat beside each other on the school bus. Sharing each other’s lunch was always a treat. Jill liked Jimmy’s corn curls, and Jimmy liked Jill’s mother’s chocolate chip cookies. Their piano lessons after school were at different times, but recitals were always together. They always gave each other support and encouragement.

Even in junior high, they would spend as much time together as possible. Jill felt a connection to Jimmy that couldn’t be broken, even when they had disagreements. Alas, then came high school, and sports started to get in the way of their time together. In the fall, Jim was in football and Jill was in cross-country. In the winter, Jim was in boys’ basketball and Jill was in girls’ basketball. Then springtime came, and it was baseball for Jim and track for Jill.

Time spent together was at a minimum compared to before. The time they did spend together was quality time with each other’s family. Yahtzee or a number of other games were always set up and played with competition. Jim and Jill were best buddies.

Then along came Patty the cheerleader—perky, blonde, good grades, a girly girl. She made no bones about wanting to be Jim’s girl. She flirted and flirted.

Rumors got back to Jill. It made her blood boil. Jim had been Jill’s love since she was four years old. No cheerleader was going to steal her guy! When Jim came home late from ball practice that night, Jill was watching out her bedroom window for him. As he pulled into his driveway, Jill opened the window and shouted down to him.

    Jim! I’ll be right down.

He waved to her and leaned against his car to wait. When Jill reached him, her auburn hair was pulled back into its usual ponytail. Her jersey reflected the school colors of red and white. She had a frayed hole in her jeans just above her right knee. On her feet were sparkly flip-flops she had stepped into when she raced down the steps. Her flip-flops were the only indication that she too had a girly girl deep down inside.

The shoes sparkled from the streetlight, and her painted toes stirred something deep inside of Jim. As Jill stood looking up at him with anxiety written all over her face, he couldn’t help but be concerned. She stood there, her heart bare for him to see. Jill looked, for all intents and purposes, as though she had lost her best friend.

What is it? What’s happened? questioned Jim.

Jill began. She told him of the rumors and her fears. Her bottom lip quivered, her eyes searching.

They had never reached this point in their relationship before. Never had they expressed their feelings for each other. They were buddies. Isn’t that what they called each other? Best buddies.

It was the moment of truth. Jim, with his sandy brown hair and blue eyes, stood tall before her. He loved her. They were only juniors in high school, but he knew he loved her. Hadn’t he always loved her? Why hadn’t he told her? It was because he didn’t want to ruin what they had. This was definitely decision time. Jim could see how hard this was for her.

Patty—yes, Patty—was coming on strong. She was the prettiest girl on the cheerleading squad. He was flattered, but she didn’t hold a candle to Jill. It was Jill, always Jill he was loyal to.

Jill finished saying her piece. If you want to date Patty, I don’t know what I’ll do. Tears brimming her eyes, she stood looking up at him, wringing her hands.

He reached out and held her shoulders. Stop. I don’t want to date Patty. Jill, I never told you this because I thought it would change things between us. Taking her face gently in his hands, he said, I love you. I think I have always loved you. Sure, we fight like a brother and sister sometimes, but I can’t imagine life without you.

Tears broke free, then a sob and a huge smile. I’ve always loved you too. I guess we were both afraid of the same thing, Jill admitted.

He engulfed her with his arms, pulling her in close to him. Stirrings started to arouse in them as they stood with arms around each other. Jim looked down at Jill and asked, May I kiss you?

    Breathless she whispered, Yes.

Ever so gently, she leaned into him, and their lips met. A heat started to grow. The intensity of the moment caused Jim to hold Jill at arm’s length. Okay, well then, now what?

We must behave, she said with a smile.

I’ll walk you to your door, Jim offered.

At the door he leaned down and kissed her again and lingered on her scent. Pulling away, he promised, I’ll see you tomorrow. You can count on it!

As their last two years of high school passed and Jim grew into a man, a yearning deep inside of him began to grow. He loved his country and the red, white, and blue. His dad had flown the stars and stripes outside the family home Jim’s entire life. Jill could see it coming. She knew this man was special, and her fears should not stand in his way. In the summer after his senior year, Jim enlisted.

First his e-mails came from California and then Afghanistan. As a soldier in the army, life is undeniably serial. You hear the stories on the evening news, but to experience bombings firsthand—the impact and power and noise—is daunting.

Jim experienced true heroes being killed and maimed. He developed anger deep in his soul. Like others before him, war was truly a woe for him that had little meaning until now.

To see sheep to the left and the enemy to the right was a strange fact, hard for people back home to fathom. When night came, a new fear set in; the word ambush took on an entirely new feeling.

Jim would lie awake at night wondering about his gal back home in Indiana. Was she still excited about her studies in college? Would they ever wed, or would he be a statistic like so many others? He was a mechanic now, a corporal. He had gained skills he would be able to use back home when he returned to civilian life. Home—he pictured Jill’s home next door and remembered the night she had shouted at him from her window and the first kiss that followed. They had been true to themselves since then, both agreeing to wait for more until they wed.

Down the road maybe we will have a couple of kids. A boy and girl would be nice. I think a boy first, Jim mused out loud to Keith. Keith had been his comrade since arriving here half a world away from home. "A big brother for protection
