    Chapter 1

It was not yet morning, the event of yester night still left a sharp pain in her broken heart too big to handle. Not knowing where to go or what next to expect, Eliza took a deep breath, shaking with trembling hands and trembling heart. And dark eyes dripping with tears, telling a story, a story of pain, fear and regret which only she could understand perfectly at this moment of her life. She wondered how it all got to this point for her.

Where nothing else seem to matter other than life itself. To the point of no return, notwithstanding the horrible sound coming from the adjacent room from where she was, she tried moving her legs from the dusty floor, but realized she could not. She neither felt life nor pain from trying to move that part of her body. Then she realize she was hurt and dead on that leg! The sharp pain from her back to the leg only made her life worse as that was the beginning of the end for a life full of drama and intrigues. Here she is today, a woman who never considered life to be anything but fun. She would do anything to live forever if that was possible, but today, she has been subjected to the reality of vanity in the face of disaster.

The struggles that have been her life, such stories of a painful troubled life where there was no option or alternative to anything than acceptance of faith to live for the next day, tears, blood and regrets flowed freely from her emotionally wrecked body. Suddenly! She cried out loud,’’ Lord, shine thy face of mercy upon me! Please, don’t let this be my last day oh Lord! Help me to be strong, have mercy, OH ‘lord! It was like the wakeup call her captors have been waiting for. ‘’What is wrong with you spoilt brat? I warned you not to make a sound! Do you want me to waste your pretty little body to the vultures in this desert or you want me to kill your baby daughter before your very eye? Chose now! Pointing the gun to her head, ready to kill. Eliza now knew it was not a dream or joking matter anymore. Her captor, devilish looking with large deadly eyes, scuffy looking, smelling bad like a dead rat. He seem not to have a care in the world about anything. Here was a man who probable have seen the worst of life. With no ambition or dreams at all, he looks more ready to die than to live and any attempt to push his button or make him mad, would lead to disaster, not for him, because he has nothing to live for, but for her who love life so much. This gentle brute, Screamed at her saying, ’the choice is yours to stay alive or to die with your daughter! Which do you prefer? This is not the first time she is seeing or hearing this ugly bully who happen to be the same guy whose mood determines what next happens in her shattered life.

Right now, the only thought in her wacked mind is, how to save her 5years old child. She was abducted along with her child when she was just about coming out of her car in front of her friend’s house, Rose. Rose is a diplomat and the wife of the city mayor in their little town down the Delta coast of America. She and Eliza’s family have been friends for over a decade. Aside from the fact that they are both foreigners and from the same city in America, this friendship extended to the children growing up together and even claiming to be one family. A night before her capture, Rose and Eliza had met in the city mall, just a few kilometers away from the city square, each woman had gone shopping for the usual family monthly food and other house hold supplies.

Rose on her part had a party to organize for the yearly mayor’s children end of year show. This is solely her responsibility as the wife of the town mayor, she holds it a duty to host the children of the town every year to lavish party for all. It is an annual tradition which allows her to impact into the lives of all, both rich and poor coming together as one at this time of the year.

While in the shopping mall, Rose was unmindful of the pretty figure standing right behind her, when the cry of a little baby attracted her from the other side of the store. She looked back at the direction of the sound and wondered what type of mother would allow her baby to be crying without attention in such a public mall. At first, she thought to herself, where be the mother of this child, why would she not attend to her baby’s needs? She even wondered why any mother can be so uncaring to ignore such high sounding heart wrenching cry of her baby. Why bring her to the mall at this time of the day if she knew the baby would disturb the peace of all in the mall? As far as she is concerned, there are certain things that are better left for nannies or house helps to do. She places every other person below her and likes rating them as second class citizens under her.

Haven come from a very prestigious wealthy family, Rose had never known or seen the other side of midnight or suffering as the case maybe. She have never suffered lack or want, neither has she experience hunger or anything that is unpleasant in her life. Her Irish father and Nigerian mother both met in the United States (US) when both were studying for their doctorate degrees. The mother who worked as a carrier diplomat, ending up in the Nigerian mission House in New York and her father a surgeon who transverse the length and breadth of the world doing what he knows how to do best—(-saving lives)had just three children. Rose was a favorite because she reminded them of their heritage. She has according to her mother, more of her grandmother’s fighting spirit and looks physically like her Irish American mother from her father’s side. Her Irish grandmother’s beauty swept her grandfather off his feet when she was only 17years of age, at that time, she was nick named by her grandfather as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and her beauty was superb!

Her dad is the product of that love between both, but that was how far their relationship could last. After the birth of her dad, she was told the war broke out in Europe, her grandparents suffered forced separation because her grandfather (God bless his soul) Mr. White man was drafted to the war to fight for his country, he was so proud of his Irish roots that he ended up joining the IRA,(Irish Republican Army).

The IRA fought gallantly against Britain for reasons of war, according to the story, her grandfather won several medals for his country. Her father Richard Whiteman (Jr), was only three (3) years old when his father died fighting for the IRA. They said he flew a jet which was loaded with bombs, fighting through the British no fly zone, his jet was gunned down by the Royal Navy, which ended a very strong love story abruptly with the heart of a young mother forever broken. These memories she kept with her as she struggled alone in her loneliness to raise and save the only fruit of her true love. She left Ireland for America where she successfully raised her only son and child. She was so heart broken and devastated that she refused to be consoled, she never remarried even if she became a forced widow by circumstance at the age of 20years.

The love she had for her late husband, Whiteman (snr), never allowed her to open up her broken heart for another man. She made a promise to Richard (SNR), shortly before he left down the road of no return (War), that she will always and only love him. She promised him also that come rain, come shine, she will die Mrs. Alicia Richard white man senior (srn). Even if she had the premonition of her husband’s death, she could not bring herself to the reality when the smartly dressed Army officer pulled up in their little farm house that faithful day, with a crest fallen face and a sober look, holding in his hands the American flag wrapped up nicely and a pair of her husband’s cap, he did not finish knocking at the front door when Alicia Richard white man senior and her little son, Richard white man junior, opened and immediately fell down on her kneels sobbing deep from the heart without a sound, but with only hot tears rolling down her pretty innocent face now red from the pain inside. She dreamt about his crash in the jet the previous night in her sleep.

Henry willow did not think this was going to be easy for him, in fact, he regretted this part of his military life to the end. The thought of you been a messenger of doom or disseminator of bad news to close friend’s wife or family is worse than you bombing a million enemy camps for him. But this was a task that must be accomplished for two reasons- to be closer in time of needs and to discharge your duties to father land, whether good or bad, you are to obey before complain, orders must be obeyed. That day was one very bad day for this young officer who has just lost his partner who was more of a family to him.

Sometimes in our lives, we are our own worst enemies, the fear of our own self is worse than that of an enemy in certain circumstances of our lives.
