Chapter 1

Andrew had proven them all wrong... when they said it wouldn't last!

Five years together, five years without problems... of course they had their little disagreements, point out any couple who claimed never to have argued, and you would be showing liars. But their disagreements had been minor and quickly resolved.

In all of his friends minds it shouldn't have worked... basically he had done just about everything wrong. He had met her... his Imara, online, on a dating site of all places, and the fact that she was African, (and black) had many shaking their heads.

Just don't send any money when she asks... that had been the most frequent advice. Andrew had simply smiled, she wasn't a scammer or fake, and he had already sent her money, so it was seen that he had broken two cardinal rules within the very first week, but he broke many more as time passed. Within a month of their first electronic hello he was sat on a flight heading south from the cold and wet UK, the destination, Entebbe on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, the main airport for the landlocked Pearl of Africa... Uganda.

She won't be there! A small grin crept onto the lips of his sister, Seriously Andrew, I thought at your age you would have more sense!

At my age, thirty five! But he hadn't doubted for a second. He trusted his gut, and his gut told him to trust her.

But he reserved the greatest sin until three months had passed. That was when he proposed to his younger girlfriend, a proposition that she accepted without hesitation. It was also when the many harbingers of doom and gloom forecast that it wouldn't last six months, they could see tears... and without exception they all expected her to disappear once he had lifted her from poverty and settled her in the wealthy first world!

Of course Imara had proven them all wrong. But she would also be the first to admit that Africa produced more than its fair share of gold-diggers and scammers, Which is an embarrassment for me to admit, she would say. But I have never been one of those girls.

And so time passed, the interracial couple became old news, Imara settled into British life and marriage... they were comfortable.
