    Western USA - Cristina Rebiere

    Authors

    Welcome!

    Hello!

Thank you for purchasing this eBook and welcome to your new " Travel eGuide: Western USA ". We hope it will help you discover this marvelous region, between the Rocky Mountains and Colorado plateau with breathtaking landscapes and gorgeous national parks. The nature is really magnificent and we wish to share with you an unforgettable journey.

You are going to travel a route of more than 4.000 kilometers (2.485 miles) where nature is at the heart of the journey: discover all the marvels of the national parks, meet wild animals, enjoy hikes, landscapes and natural curiosities, this guide will allow you not only to dream, but to make it real by helping you to plan your travel according to your passions and your hobbies!

This eGuide offers a different approach between a travel log and a classic tourist guide. You can imagine that we do not have a team like the Lonely Planet, so you will not find in this e-book full of addresses of accommodation or restaurants. We share with you our travels, our experiences. We hope that this will help you discover new destinations and will make you want to visit them.

If you wish to follow the same route as we did, you will find it on the cover and below. It took us almost 3 weeks of steady journey: busy days and not much rest, then if you are not experienced travelers, I advise you to set at least 25 days to make it.

This eGuide works almost like a website, and does not need to be used along with an Internet connection (unless you want to access the "OpenStreetMap" and other hyperlinks that we provide throughout the book in real time).

Depending on the capabilities of your eBook reader, you can enjoy zoom features on photos. You can also click on the hypertext links (or hyperlinks) underlined throughout the eGuide. We tried our best to make your reading experience as enjoyable as possible, despite the wide technology gaps between various reading systems.

Be sure that we will propose to you more interactive versions, as the formats and eBook readers should be standardized in the future!

    Well, enough chatting. Let's go!

    Sincerely,

    Cristina & Olivier

    Formalities

Atourist visa is not required for French citizens, but you must have a travel authorization called ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Here you'll find all the information http://www.americanairlines.fr/intl/fr/informationVoyage/usEntry.jsp?anchorEvent=false&from=Nav#  and here  http://www.cbp.gov/travel/international-visitors/esta . It is necessary to have a biometric passport.

Your ESTA is in fact your payment proof so keep and print it. You should have it with you when traveling. The fee is 14$/person and its validity is two years if you do not change your passport in the mean time.

An international driving licence is strongly recommended if you rent a car and do not want to have any problem.

    Budget tips:

    Plane tickets

Depending on your country of origin, the tips can be different to have cheaper tickets plane.

Here are some advice which apply, no matter where are you coming from.

    Tips:

Buy your tickets in advance (minimum of 3 or even 6 months) to get the best rates so you can choose the dates of your vacation. Look for promotions from different airlines.

Do not buy your tickets at once, but test the market first. Look for the airline companies which offer your envisaged destinations. For the west central region of the United States you have several big cities where you may land: Las Vegas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Albuquerque.

Buy your tickets towards one of these cities and then prepare your route or itinerary according to it.

Pay attention because the tickets prices may vary on every hour and without any logic. Consequently, record in a file on your computer the prices you have found for several days before making your decision. You can so compare and know immediately when you will have an opportunity not to be missed.

I tested the market during a week and then I purchased our tickets to Denver. Even if we changed 2-3 times our plane, we were able to save up more than 250 € / ticket. We saved 750€ on our flight costs only with this simple method. To have an idea of what does it mean: this sum allowed us to cover more than half of the accomodation expenses for the period of our stay!

If possible, avoid traveling at holiday times (Christmas, New Year, etc.) to get the cheapest price for your airline tickets.

According to your starting point, try the following airline companies to have more chances to obtain good prices: American Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France or KLM, Air Canada.

To know all the airline companies which arrive in Las Vegas see here ; in Denver here ; in Phoenix here ; in Albuquerque here and in Salt Lake City here.

Better period to travel: if your journey aims at the discovery of Nature, national parks as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, etc., I recommend you to schedule it in July if you have children (who are thus on holidays) or if you prefer a more quiet month, but with available services and open roads, May or September are the ideal for you!

    Traveling in USA

    Tips:

Acar rental is the most suitable way of getting around. It also gives you a lot of freedom. It costs about 41 $ per day taxes on the automatic toll of highways InterState (aprox. 30,5€/day) if you book online in advance, insurance included.

Note: You must make your reservation using a credit card. If you did not reserve by Internet with the insurance included, you can have big surprises once there!!!

We did this without proper care by thinking that this kind of thing can happen somewhere else, but not in the United States. Make no mistake, it is the same thing: we had to pay three times the announced price on Internet and this, only after tough negotiations with the renter! Useless to tell you that the final bill was high: instead of $696 planned for 12 days, we paid finally $1824. Thus do not make the same error and reserve with the inclusive insurance. Avoid reserving if you cannot include the insurance, even if the price seems cheaper!

Thrifty Car Rental is the company that I do not recommend you, unless you can buy online the insurance with the car rental. Our only consolation was the fact that the employee of the counter felt sorry for us and gave us a luxury car for the price of a normal car, feeling bad because of the difference between the price of the reservation and the bill that we actually paid.

Be careful if you have to return your car out of the usual working hours. Make sure that somebody signs the resumption of your car because otherwise you can have problems as we had during our first journey in the United States, in New York. We received several phone calls of a robot threatening us with trial if we did not return the car, even if the car had been return in proper time! If you have to return the car at special hours ask from the beginning how to proceed and with whom you can obtain the signature on your papers upon delivery of the vehicle.
