At 23 I felt trapped and took my first flight. At 24 I decided to go see the world. Like many, I thought that international travel was unaffordable and only for the wealthy, but I quickly discovered just how possible it was. Now, at age 28 I have been to over 20 countries. I have learned A LOT along the way and hope this eBook makes it easier for you to travel safely, comfortably, and affordably whether it’s a short vacation or a long-term adventure. A little knowledge goes a long way. YOU can travel cheap!

1. Choosing a location, timeframe and asking other key questions
Is it the bustling, cobblestone streets of Europe that call you? The rainforests and shades of green in central America? A sparsely populated coastline for just you and your bare feet? Or do you just want to find the cheapest possible getaway far from everything and everyone you know? Are you willing to do a work exchange to gain new skills and keep costs down to travel longer? Will you utilize websites to stay for free with locals? Will you be eating out or cooking your own food? Planning every detail ahead or spontaneously going where your heart leads you? Do you want to party your little butt off surrounded by other travelers or do you want to live and immerse yourself with locals? Is history or hiking more your thing? Do you plan to embark on a one stop trip or to see more than one location?
The answers to these questions are unique to each individual and to each trip taken as well as experimentation but they are important to consider. Below you will find all the information needed to help you decide on the kind of trip you’d like to take. Remember that the more flexible and open you are, the better for you and your wallet. You can always book a one-way flight and wing it but that certainly isn’t for everyone. This guide will be useful for keeping costs low, sparking new ideas and for easing any anxieties you have as this urge to travel grows into action. I’ve found that if a heart has the desire to see the world, it’s a need that can only be fulfilled by making it happen. The itch won’t go away unless it’s indulged by packing your bags and boarding a plane to somewhere unfamiliar. On a deeper level, it’s often a quest to discover something about yourself through engaging with the broader world and the unknown.
As for location, unless you’ve always dreamt of a specific place and have zeroed in on it, consider everything! Explore flights, exchange rates, time of year, public transportation options, cost of living, work exchanges and average accommodation cost. Well-known locations don’t always mean better
and certainly don’t mean cheaper; know there are many hidden
