    Chapter 1

My name is Samantha Locke and my life has changed dramatically over the last few months. From staying in Children’s Camp 2, to being rescued from CC2 and then rescuing other children from there; life has been exciting. I have become an instant ‘mom’ to four children and Julian and I got engaged. Our group is leaving for Cape Town today to hear what the president’s plans are for a United South Africa and how he wants my Uncle Robert to help. I love our new home at Satara Camp but I always wanted to see the oceans. I must be excited because I make coffee and go and look for Julian; he is already outside and watching the sky get lighter.

Julian and I sat outside and watched the sun rise over Satara Camp and then I got dressed and went to help with making breakfast. The air was fresh and smelt like grass and soil as I walked to the kitchen. Our group would leave after breakfast and I was excited about making the journey to Cape Town. Tanya was making coffee as I walked in and my mom was scrambling some eggs. Morning, I greeted, Did you all sleep well? Tanya replied, No Sam, the baby was playing soccer the whole night, she said rubbing her back. My mom just groaned, I kept on checking and rechecking everything I had packed for the trip. I have added more things to our bags; Peter did the same so I don’t feel too guilty. And you Aunt Sarah? I asked. Aunt Sarah took the rolls out of the oven and winked, Once Uncle Robert went to sit in the lounge so that I could sleep. He was up every few minutes checking the route again and again and again. You get the idea; I suggested he check the maps in the lounge.

Sally and Danny looked worried; they would have to see that Satara Camp functioned while we were away. Sally groaned, Just promise us that you’ll be back as soon as possible. If you get any weird vibes while you are in Cape Town; get back as soon as you can. It’s going to be tough without you here; you know how much we are going to miss you. At least Simon and Connor are responsible otherwise we would be lost. Aunt Sarah said, I’m going to ring the bell for breakfast now so you can go and get your families moving. I rushed back to our rondawel to make sure everybody was ready for breakfast. Julian had them dressed and they were already on their way to the cars. They had bags and boxes to put in the boot and we could then collect the other boxes and bags after breakfast. The children were all excited because Uncle Robert had said we would be travelling along the coast. The thought of seeing the sea, waves and walking on a beach appealed to me too. The only oceans I had seen were in books and movies. I was excited because we were going to see the Indian and Atlantic Oceans on our trip.

James would be travelling with my mom, Peter and Craig because our car would be too full with six people in. Craig seemed happier since Connor and Danny had forgiven him and the boys included him in their games again. The children remembered what a good person he was before that terrible night and forgave him. Our breakfast was delicious and Aunt Sarah had baked extra rolls for us to take on our trip. Uncle Robert and Peter had a few questions to answer from the group leaders while we packed the cars and checked in our rondawel to make sure we had taken everything we might need. We had some fresh fruit and vegetables but we would have to find food as we travelled to Cape Town. Some last minute checks to see if we needed to take anything else with and then we were saying goodbye to those that were staying behind. We left Satara Camp and on the way to Orpen Gate the children spotted elephants, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, monkeys and springbuck.

Once we were out of the Kruger National Park we stopped on the side of the road to relieve ourselves and stretch our legs. Uncle Robert was hoping that we would make it to White River or Nelspruit to fill up with petrol. Those places would have cars that we could siphon petrol from to fill up our tanks and petrol cans. The day was hot and cloudy and it was a relief when it started raining so that we could cool down a bit in the hot cars. At least we could listen to the radio in the car which helped. I can tell you that it’s not easy travelling with young children as Nicky and Lara needed to stretch their legs at least every hour. The older children didn’t mind too much as it gave them an excuse to run around too. Tanya was grateful every time we stopped because she needed to relieve herself often. This baby is jumping on my bladder I tell you, she said waddling into the bushes on the side of the road. Mom said, If you get tired you must sleep on the back seat; the rest of us will squash in for an hour or so.

We passed a lot of cars outside White River and Uncle Robert, Peter, Mike and Julian went to see if there was any petrol left in the tanks. They parked away from the deserted cars and Aunt Sarah and my mom kept guard. The cars were on the side of the road neatly parked as though their drivers had just stepped out for a quick walk. We wanted to get out of the cars but Uncle Robert shouted, Stay in the cars; we’ll stop in a few minutes when we are away from here. They found a bit of petrol in the cars and when we stopped a few kilometres away the children could stretch their legs again. I got out the car and sat down next to Julian on the side of the road. I asked, Julian what did you guys see there? Julian sighed and said, A mass grave; there were about thirty skeletons lying just off the side of the road and we didn’t want the children to see. Nicky and Lara have just stopped getting nightmares and the sight of those skeletons could have the nightmares start again. Uncle Robert said that when we reach White River we can rest for an hour and have lunch. I think Tanya is ready to lie down for a bit; maybe we can find a bigger car in White River or a kombi or two.

We entered White River just before twelve and drove around to find a good spot for our lunch. Julian spotted a car dealership with two kombi’s parked inside and Mike soon had the kombi’s going and filled up with petrol. Aunt Sarah set out our lunch and we had a picnic outside the dealership. At least Tanya would now be able to lie down comfortably when she was tired and we also had extra space. After lunch we left for Nelspruit and Aunt Sarah said that she was excited to see her old nursery again. The drive to Nelspruit was uneventful and we saw no other cars or people walking around. We stopped to pick some bananas from the countless banana trees that were on the side of the road. We would fry them later with our supper.

We arrived at the nursery and Uncle Robert and Peter went to check if it was safe for us to get out of the cars. They came back and said that it was safe and the children ran around and looked at the plants and we could all stretch our legs. Mike showed us where he and Tanya had grown their vegetable garden and planted fruit trees. Luckily there were some vegetables and fruit that we could pick that would last us a while. Aunt Sarah walked around inside the house and then she thanked Mike and Tanya for looking after her old home. It didn’t look as though anybody else had been at the nursery since Mike had left and we decided to spend the night in Aunt Sarah’s old house. Tanya was tired so she went to lie down for a bit while Aunt Sarah and my mom warmed up the cooked meat and rolls for us that we had brought with from Satara Camp. I boiled some carrots and beans for our supper that I harvested from the garden and we had a feast. We had fried bananas for dessert and after supper we could all shower. I quickly washed our dirty clothes and hung them up to dry. Everybody was tired after the long and hot journey and the children all went to sleep on the lounge floor. Aunt Sarah, my mom and I would do the first watch together while the drivers got some sleep. Tanya came to sit with us for a while but she soon went back to bed as her back was hurting.

I made us some coffee and then we sat in different rooms to make sure that nobody entered the property while most of us were sleeping. I sat in the lounge and looked out the
