About this ebook

Brock’s cousins come to visit and that means Brock now has four young girls to bother him. Another older cousin named Stephen joins them for water fun at the Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls. After the cousins leave, more company arrives and it is back to the Falls again. This time they visit birds and butterflies and ride on a boat that almost goes up to the foot of the falls. Snow falls on them in the middle of summer. They walk behind the falls and stand by the roaring rapids downstream. They learn about the War of 1812 when American soldiers fought the British in Canada. Brock learns all about a soldier’s life back then and he was glad he wasn’t one. Your children will learn about Canada while being entertained with interesting and exciting stories in the Brock and Becca series.

    CHAPTER 1

    Mom came into the room.

Please turn down the television, she said. I have some important news. I just hung up the phone from talking to my brother and his wife. Her mother is going into the hospital for a serious operation and Amy and Perry want to be with her. They wanted to know if we could look after their girls for a few days. Of course I said we could.

Are they coming here? I asked.

My sister Becca and her dumb doll, Krissy, are more than enough. How could I put up with three more girls and their dolls? That was just expecting too much.

Yes, they will come here so you will have to give up your bedroom, Brock.

But Mom, I don’t want them in my bedroom messing with my things.

I will make sure they don’t.

    Are they bringing their dolls?

Why are you asking about their dolls, Brock? Do you want to play with them? That was Dad putting in his two cents’ worth.

    Of course not, I growled.

I don’t think the girls have dolls, Mom said. I know Arwen and Marin each have a toy horse and Rio, the baby, has a teddy bear.

Horses and teddy bears would be a lot better than dolls.

I don’t think I will be able to arrange for any holidays on this short notice, Dad said. I will ask tomorrow when I am at work.

I understand, Mom replied. We will be fine. We’re family and families help out in times of trouble. I just hope Amy’s mom will be okay.

Once I know what the plans are, I might be able to get half a day off here and there to help out, Dad added.

Mom smiled and left the room.

We went back to watching television, but part of my mind was worrying about having three more girls in the house. I’m sure Mom will expect me to play with them and who knows what they will do in my bedroom?

I tried to remember their ages. Becca is six years old, so Arwen must be five, Marin would be three and Rio one.

As soon as the movie ended, I went up to my bedroom. I began planning where I could hide my favourite toys so the girls could not mess with them.

At breakfast the next morning, I asked Mom when the girls would be arriving and her answer was she did not know. Her brother was going to phone her later in the day.

I was safe for awhile, so I went out to play. I was going to make the most of my time before they arrived. At least it was summer holidays and no school.

When I came in for lunch, Mom had some answers for me.

We are picking up your cousins tomorrow at Christie Lake Conservation Area, she said. "Your father has to work so you will have to be my helper. Amy and Perry will meet us there for lunch. We can have a swim in the afternoon before they leave us and still be home in time to get supper.

I don’t want any complaints from you, she added. The girls might be upset having to come home with us, so we must make them feel welcome.

Where am I sleeping? I wanted to know so I could get used to the idea.

You will be in your sleeping bag on a cot in the laundry room. You can shut the door so you won’t be disturbed. Anything in your room that you don’t want them to touch, you can pack in one of the suitcases and bring it down to the laundry room.

I felt much better. I like my things and take care of them.

May I sleep in the laundry room tonight? I asked. I haven’t used my sleeping bag for a long time and I should try it out.

Sure you can, Brock. That will give me time to put clean sheets on your bed today instead of tomorrow morning.

Mom smiled at me as if I was being a big help and I felt like I was even older than almost nine.

Dad had gone to work when I got up in the morning. Mom was really busy.

Becca and I packed our bags for the beach while Mom made a picnic lunch and by
