CHAPTER 1
Where are we going on holiday?
I asked.
Mom did not answer my question. She was cross. She had sent me upstairs to tidy my room half an hour ago. When she came to check on me, nothing had been done. I was playing with some of my cars.
Oh, Brock!
she began, and then I had to listen to her go over and over about doing what one was told when one was told to do it.
Mom was winding down, so I thought a change of subject would be a good idea. That was why I mentioned holidays.
It was a mistake.
Now I was listening to why I did not deserve to go on a holiday.
The room got cleaned, and Mom’s temper cooled down.
She even asked Dad that evening where he thought we should go on our holidays.
Give me a day or two to think about it and I’ll bet I can come up with an idea,
Dad said.
The next night he had a suggestion.
Why don’t we go to New Brunswick?
he asked. We have been to all the provinces and some of them more than once, but we have never been to New Brunswick to see their sights.
Krissy and I want to go to New Brunswick,
Becca sang out.
Becca is my six-year-old sister and Krissy is her dumb doll. If I could think of a way to get rid of the doll without getting sent to my room for at least a year, I would.
Now Becca was saying she wants to go to New Brunswick, and she doesn’t even know where it is.
As I was thinking these thoughts, Mom must have been thinking also because she said, Give me a couple of days and I’ll see what New Brunswick has to offer.
Two nights later Mom was full of news. She had a list of all kinds of things for us to do, so it was settled.
Out came the Atlas, and we found the large Atlantic province we would visit.
Mom told her mother, who is my Grandma, where we were going on our August holiday.
Grandma said, I have friends who live in Moncton, and I’m sure they would enjoy showing you around.
My Grandma seems to know people all over Canada.
I know Mom likes to make her own plans, but it ended up we would have lunch with Grandma’s friends, Dolores and Don, when we arrived in Moncton.
I didn’t mind. I have met some really fun people even if they were old.
Mom and Dad were keeping what we were going to do a secret, but I didn’t care. As long as I didn’t have to go to school, I was happy.
The July summer days flew by.
On the 28th of July Mom said, We are leaving on holiday a little earlier than we first planned. Today is Tuesday and we will be flying to Montreal on Thursday, July 30th.
I knew Montreal was in Quebec, so I piped up with, I thought we were going to New Brunswick.
We are,
was all Mom would say.
Wednesday was a busy day, especially for Mom. Becca and I packed our own back-packs, but Mom looked after everything else.
The last thought I had before I went to sleep on Wednesday night was to wonder why we were going to Montreal.
As usual, Mom had arranged with a limousine service for a car to take us to the airport.
It is cheaper than leaving our car there in the long-term parking area.
The driver arrived at our door ten minutes early, but we were ready. Dad sat in front with the driver. Mom, Becca, Krissy and I sat in the back seat.
The airport, as always, was a busy place. We got through the security section without any problems, but a man behind us set off the alarm. They waved a wand over him to find out what caused the problem.
I stood there watching until Mom dragged me away.
I like airports. They are full of people who are coming and going. Some are happy, some look sad, and there is everyone from babies to really old people to watch.
Becca talked to Krissy, her dumb doll, until she got bored.
That’s when she whined, I’m hungry,
and right away Dad went over to buy something from a snack counter.
I checked the time. Our plane, which was coming from Thunder Bay, was late. A lady announced it had been delayed in leaving for almost an hour because of violent weather.
I was sorry to hear that, but Dad made another trip to the snack bar.
Finally the plane arrived. I saw it land and taxi up to our gate.
Some people got off. They didn’t look sick so I guess the ride was okay.
We were told that once they cleaned the plane, we would be able to go aboard.
We didn’t have to wait very long. Because Mom and Dad had children with them, we were the first to get
