    THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

    Chapter 1 - Breaking Nest

Mondays are known to be days of luck, bad luck maybe. The back to school 'stress', the hustle and bustle of the city and the return to work formula after a long rest over the 'holly day'. Hope I am not the only one complaining of this cause I often hear my parents also shouting their brains out on Mondays.

I am a form three student from a family of four; my dad, mom, sister and I. My mom is one of the best parents in the whole world, only during Holidays; never mind. My dad is one hell of a guy but I love him all the same. My ten year old sister is a naughty girl who takes everything for granted, maybe that's also my mom's character. Guess you now know me; like father like son, you say. My classmates think of me as one stubborn being who rarely listens, but my teachers think otherwise. I am not a silent killer.

School is on again. Monday, one of my worst days. As I hop to school, I meet Freddy the bully; a fat form four student who thinks he is some sort of a super hero.

Hey, you fool, come over here. He calls in his base trembling voice.

With fright, I rush to where he is. As usual, my pocket money was always his so I did the expected, fished out a five hundred shilling note from my pocket and handed it to him. Never mind about all the exercises' I was used to doing when I met him. I arrive at school tired only to find another bully, this time a teacher; Mr. Vitisho on duty.

Why are you late young man? He roared.

    Sir, mmmh eeeh...

Eh what! I asked you why you are late.

At this point, with lack of words, I had to go through harsh punishment; working at the loo. poor me. The rest of the Monday was a disaster; forgetting to complete my assignment, noise making and all those nasty stuff that a student is thought of doing. Black Monday!

In case I am to remember, one that fateful Monday, my mom wore her moody face. No one, even my dad, knew what was wrong with her. We had supper without our normal tendency of asking how our day had been. Everyone was quiet in a way that you could have heard the heart pump. Supper was over in a couple of hours after a hard struggle with our plates and spoons although it was a delicacy worth appreciating. Then my mom threw the bombshell.

I have been relocated to work in Nairobi.

What! I could not believe that, maybe not at that moment. My dad looked more surprised than I but my sister gave a broad smile and 'hurray' she went.

Does that mean that we will be moving with you?

    Absolutely.

My mom was always good at surprises. She always knew the exact time to break the news. Anyway, no news is good news, they say. At least my stomach was full to the brim when this came in, or else who knows.

Sorry, I never told you where I come from. I come from Siaya, a county in Kenya. To be specific, the rural side of it. Luckily, I do go to Siaya Township Secondary School where my fate of learning is situated. At least I do go to a town, Siaya town, that is with pride. I got pleasure to visit Kisumu town during an educational trip some time in primary. To sum it all up, I am a village boy so moving to Nairobi will... I really do love where I come from; my friends, my neighbors and most likely nature. I am fond of nature and all that it gives but as for the city, what I do see on TV, those buildings reaching up the
