About this ebook
Blake Starwater is captain of the Starship Perilous. Traveling along with him are the frisky Felioness, Kitty, and the cynical robot, OMBot. Together they soar between the numerous Known Worlds, taking on the jobs that other space crews won't do. The risky jobs. The dangerous jobs. The sometimes less-than-legal jobs.
While healing up from their previous adventure, the crew encounters an android in need of help. They also meet the ruthless gang determined to possess the android, headed by a mysterious man dressed all in black. But who is he? And what exactly is his connection to the android?
Will this simple job end up being a giant pain in the ribs?

Blake Starwater grunted as the Beetle's solid boot connected with his injured ribs. Blake sank down to the cold metal floor, groaning.
And stay down,
muttered the thug, mandibles clicking.
The Beetle's heavy footsteps moved away as he crossed the cargo hold of the Perilous to rejoin his comrades. Blake managed to lift his head from the floor to watch. The three individuals who had boarded the Perilous were gathered around the short stairwell that led down into the lower pressure bay. Their ship was connected to the Perilous there at the bottom access hatch.
The human, Vannover Sykes, the leader of the group, kept his attention on their android hostage, BENI. The Beetle now stood at Sykes's shoulder, his rifle held casually in both hands, facing Blake. The squat, armored thug twisted up his face into a smug grin.
You okay, Blake?
asked Kitty. The Felioness limped over and offered a hand. Blake grunted through clenched teeth as he regained his feet with Kitty's help.
Farewell, Starwater,
called Sykes. The man looked as cool and calm as ever, dressed neatly in his all-black silk suit, over which he wore a black trenchcoat. The dark shades on his face glowed softly with colored light as they displayed whatever information Sykes was currently accessing directly into his eyes. He could still see; he waved a mocking salute in Blake's direction.
The third member of the group, the heavily-tattooed Nagi, showed her forked tongue and hissed. She twirled her spear ostentatiously, and descended the short stairwell to the lower pressure bay and their waiting ship.
What should we do with this one?
asked the Beetle, gesturing towards OMBot with his rifle. The cylindrical robot was standing beside the intruders, trembling on unsteady legs. Can I waste it?
As you wish,
replied Vannover with a shrug. The man's right palm was glowing brightly from within; he held this hand open towards the android, BENI. Get moving, gadget.
The android, compelled to comply by whatever field or energy was being emitted by Sykes's hand, turned and stepped towards the stairwell.
Be seeing you,
called Vannover Sykes, before following after the android.
The Beetle, who had turned to face the quaking OMBot, now lifted up one of those heavy steel boots and delivered a swift, solid kick to the front panel of the robot. OMBot toppled over onto its back, letting out a harsh beep.
The Beetle came forward, standing over the supine, struggling robot. The Beetle's mandibles clicked audibly as he hefted the rifle into position to fire. He took aim at the robot. OMBot beeped mournfully.
No,
cried Kitty, digging her fingers into Blake's arm.
Don't do it,
said Blake, taking a step forward. Pain from his injured ribs made him gasp.
The Beetle wheeled around, rifle pointed at Blake and the Felioness. Stay back,
he warned.
It's just a simple robot,
said Blake, hand outstretched, appealing for peace.
Simple?
From its position on the floor, OMBot beeped sourly.
And you,
said the Beetle, refocusing the barrel of the rifle at OMBot, shut up.
Sykes and the BENI had paused at the top of the stairwell and were watching the exchange. Now Sykes turned his head to consider the Beetle. Finish him, or don't. Stop messing about.
The Beetle grunted, clicking his mandibles together. He favored Blake and Kitty with a wide, malicious grin, and then turned his head towards OMBot. Raised the laser rifle.
Don't!
cried Blake and Kitty as one.
