The joint space programs of the French and Americans, working furiously through the days and nights following the initial reception of the message, finally cracked the language barrier. Decoding and deciphering of the communication commenced at once.

It's an invitation, said Jean-Pierre Chauvet, the French head of operations, excitedly waving a sheet of paper. A balding man with a large nose and a tiny mustache, Jean-Pierre straightened up from the desk where he had been bent over, his flailing arm nearly striking the young French intern beside him in the face.
