Alpert L Pine

Alpert L Pine lives and writes in a small cabin, off the grid, in the Northwest United States. Once per week, he treks to the nearest town on foot—rain, snow or shine—and spends the day transferring his material into a digital format, with the help of the kindly librarians whom he has befriended. When he's not writing, he spends much of his time with a metal detector, looking for a rumored Templar treasure which is said to be buried somewhere nearby. To date, he's found a few nails, an old Liberty head penny, and a strange amulet. For free stories, news about past and future releases, and more, visit his website: AlpertLPine.com

    The Betty

You'd better sit down, said Entmeyer. The balding man's skull and forehead glistened with sweat. There were dark shadows on his grey, button-up shirt, under his arms. The programmer looked at me without meeting my eyes.

Alright, what's going on? I asked, as I stepped up into one of the high stools. I ignored the folded menu on the table in front of me.

Entmeyer waited until I was seated and then he sat in his own chair. He scooped up the menu, turned it over, then laid it back down, front side facing up again. Nervous as hell, I thought.

    Christ, Ent? What's the matter?

He blew out a breath through pursed lips and ran a hand over his mostly-smooth scalp. It's the Betty.

The Betty? What the hell happened with it?

Entmeyer was just leaning his head forward, shaking it side to side.

    Doesn't it work?

Of course it works. His head jerked up, face red. It works— He shut up suddenly as a waitress in a faux-leather outfit appeared beside our table.
