    Frequent reports have been written about the nutritional value of alcohol and its possible benefits in some cases, in regulated amounts. But whatever the findings, it is still a fact that alcohol in excess is damaging to your health, addictive, and destructive.

    The only way to avoid a hangover is to not drink. Providing you with a hangover detox should in no way give the impression that you can drink to excess with no ill side effects from now on. On the contrary, excess drinking is bad for you, your body, and your long-term health. If you think you may have a problem, please seek professional advice immediately.

    You regularly drink more than the nationally recommended amounts.

    1 Trip down memory lane—some hangover facts

    Hangovers affect people in many different ways, but some of the most common and familiar side effects of excessive drinking are headaches, nausea, dehydration, and tiredness.

    Headaches are mainly caused by dehydration—your brain becomes prunelike.

    Nausea is generally due to an empty acid stomach churning away (think green bile slopping about!).

    Dehydration occurs because alcohol is a diuretic—it actually encourages you to urinate and expel electrolytes that are needed for essential cell growth and repair, and your kidneys have to work overtime to process the excess fluids.

    And tiredness is due to the work your body is having to do to get better—not to mention the fact that you probably didn’t get to bed before tomorrow and that when you did, your sleep was disturbed and fitful.

    2 Water—the elixir of life

    Dehydration is the main reason for feeling so awful after indulging. Alcohol is a diuretic—it actually encourages your body to lose fluids. So before, during, and after your session you absolutely must drink at least 1.5 liters or 3 pints of water a day. (You should be drinking this amount every day anyway.)
