    Faith - Michael B

    Chapter I: Itching and scratching

Today is your big day, Faith, Jane, the vet, said, looking tenderly into my big, brown eyes as she held me high up in the air and kissed me on my damp nose.

I was at the Paws’ House, a no-kill policy shelter with 80 other dogs, bunnies, chinchillas and, of course, cats.

Speaking of cats. Snooty creatures. Always turned their noses up at me and my kind when the staff tethered us to the posts near the cattery.

The street cats were generally fine, but the British Shorthair? Hah! I didn’t like its flat face – often impassive - and short dense coat as much as it disliked our high-octane barks and slobber. How did I know? Whenever we were within inches of him, his bright yellow eyes would stare down at us unflinchingly and his body tighten into a ball, almost like a canon ball that was ready to fire.

It even swatted at my face once when I tried to go near it with all good intentions to call a truce!

For all his cattiness, I was sure he would not even be able to smell the difference between a mouse and a rat. Never mind that I couldn’t as well. I and my kind were made for bigger things, like chasing after crooks, guarding mansions and guiding the blind.

I puffed up my chest and snorted at Jane unintentionally as I reveled in my own reverie. Jane gave me a strange look.

So back to my big day.
