    Chapter One

    Alaska

A timid knock on the front door drew Jane’s attention from the pot of stew she stirred. Hm, visitors don’t normally mean good things. Laying the spoon down, she took one step towards the door when Colin stepped out of the sickroom.

I’ll get it. It might be nothing, but we need to make sure. His hand moved the curtain aside as he scanned the area. I don’t see anyone. His internal alarm wasn’t blaring, and he didn’t smell any other wolves, so he reached out and flung open the door, ready to launch an attack if needed. His eyes lowered where he found a young boy.

Oh, hello. Who are you? Jane rushed around the bristling shifter.

Is Garrett here? The boy asked, his eyes never straying from the obvious threat.

Jane bent down on one knee as she spoke. No, he has gone.

Wide, frightened eyes swung towards her. Gone! What do you mean, gone? He promised!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. He is on a mission for a few days. Is there something I can help you with?

    Who are you? he asked.

I am the wife of the man in charge of this group and a friend of Garrett’s.

Who is he? The boy’s head tilted toward Colin.

He is married to my sister-in-law. Jane patiently answered.

The boy’s eyes watered before a single tear fell. Angry fists swiped at the tear before he spoke. My ma is sick, and Garrett promised to help.

Okay. Well, Garrett isn’t here, however, I am a nurse. Can I help? The boy’s shoulders lifted, but he didn’t speak. What is wrong with your ma?

She has a cut on her leg. She hasn’t woken for two days.

Not trusting the situation, Colin asked, Where is your pa?

The boy shifted from one foot to the other before he spat out the information. He was bad. The sheriff took him away.

Are there others at your home? Colin asked.

A slight nod of his head before he answered. My brother and sisters. My aunt took her two kids and left three days ago.

Jane’s surprised eyes met Colin’s before she asked. So, you have been taking care of your ma and siblings for three days?

Yeah. I need to get back now. He said as he turned and sprinted across the yard.

Stop him while I gather supplies, Jane ordered Colin.

I don’t like this, he said as he dashed out of the door. Within three lengths, Colin held a struggling youth. A vicious punch landed close to his family jewels. Colin grunted before righting the kid and raising him until he was nose-to-nose with him. Listen. We will help you, but you better hope this isn’t a trick. Now, calm down before I spank you.

You will do no such thing, Jane said as she hurried to the storage shed. Boy, what is your name?

    John.

Fine. Colin and John come help me gather some food. Then we will take the truck in case we need it.

Ten minutes later, an angry boy sat in the backseat as Colin left the care of the injured at the cabin in his mate’s hands. The shifter followed the begrudging directions deep within the dense, ancient woods. Nestled within stood a weathered and ramshackle cabin, a forgotten relic of a bygone era. The cabin's decaying wooden exterior was worn and weather-beaten, its once vibrant hues faded to a dull gray, blending in with the surrounding wilderness.

Its roof, once sturdy and protective, now revealed flapping tin, allowing glimpses of the moss-covered rafters beneath. The relentless assault of time and nature had twisted and contorted the structure, causing it to lean precariously to one side, as if it were engaged in a never-ending battle with gravity.

Long-abandoned windows, their glass cracked and missing, served as portals for the relentless invasion of nature. The encroaching vines and foliage seized the opportunity, weaving their way through the shattered remnants of the window frames, attempting to reclaim what was once their own.

Looking at the surrounding grounds, not a speck of grass to be seen in the bare dirt yard. I am surprised this place is still standing.

Colin stepped inside the cabin and was immediately hit by a wave of disgust. The air was thick with the stench of rotting wood and mold, and the floorboards creaked under his weight. He looked around at the decrepit walls covered in peeling wallpaper and cobwebs. The place was a mess, and he couldn't believe that Angel and her children had been living here. If they mean something to Garrett, I can’t believe he left them here to live in this filth!

When he walked through the empty living room, Colin couldn't help but notice the complete lack of furniture. There was nothing but a couple of raggedy old chairs and a makeshift table made from an upturned crate. He shook his head in disbelief. How could anyone live like this?

He felt a pang of sympathy for Angel and her children. How could they possibly live like this? Colin knew they had to do something to help them, even if Garrett ended up mad.

    Colin! Help me, Jane ordered.

    Coming.

Take the food in and see what you can make for a meal. Jane turned to John and said, Take me to your ma, then gather your siblings and bring them in to eat.

Colin rolled up his sleeves and got to work. He spent the next several minutes scrubbing the makeshift table top before he would place any food on it.

The shifter sighed and thought of the food that he brought with him for the family. He couldn't wait to share it with Angel and her kids. But as he looked around the cabin, he realized that there was no place to cook. There was no stove or oven, no pots or pans, and no utensils. It was as if the family had been surviving on nothing but scraps for months.

John, are there any plates around here?

Colin watched as the boy’s cheeks filled with color, and he pointed to the corner. The shifter’s eyes followed the boy’s finger and found three plates and a handful of forks sitting precariously on the three-legged chair. That will have to work. He worked for a few minutes, setting out the bread, pasta, and carrots for the children. The two smallest will have to share plates.

The boy nodded and said, they always do. His eyes swung between the man feeding his siblings to the lady stepping into his ma’s room. His need to protect his sick ma won out, and he followed the lady in to his ma’s room.

Jane stepped into the bedroom where an unconscious frail woman laid on a sagging bed. Covers were pulled up to cover her shivering body. Not good! Jane’s training kicked in as she first felt the woman’s head. Just as I thought. John, what is your ma’s name?

    Angel.

Jane nodded. A good, powerful name. Now, go find the rest of your family and get them something to eat. She waited until he left the room before lifting the edge of the blanket off his ma’s leg. At the red angry lines running down her leg, Jane sucked in a deep breath. She leaned down and rifled through the bag, looking for a syringe and the antibiotics. Drawing up the right dosage, she gave Angel a shot in her hip. Seeing no reaction to the shot, Jane pulled out a family concoction used for cuts. She slathered the oozing open wound with it before wrapping it in gauze.

Once done, she stepped back into the main area of the cabin to find Colin struggling to get all the kids settled and fed. Hey, now. She took charge. Let’s all get seated so you can eat and feel better. Her eyes swung over the four kids. Just as the boy said, he was the oldest. Their wide, curious eyes followed Colin as he heaped piles of spaghetti on each plate. Once all the children were eating, Jane spoke. Colin, after they eat, we are going to need to take Angel back home to treat her.

You aren’t taking my ma anywhere! John shoved back from the table, hands balled at his sides as he tried to protect his mother.

Jane lowered to her knees to meet John’s angry face. John, what I meant to say was we must take all of you with us in order to help your mother. If we don’t get her somewhere with more medical supplies, she may die. You don’t want that to happen, do you?

His chin quivered three times before he sucked in air and shook his head.

Okay, then. We will pack everything you need and take it with us. Okay?

John’s head nodded ever-so-slowly. His eyes assessed her before turning to his family and saying, Hurry up and eat. We need to pack and go with them.

Jane stood and said, Colin, let’s start in Angel’s room and pack what she has there while they eat.

Colin followed her into the next room, where he whispered, What are you thinking? He made his way to the bedroom where Angel lay. But once again, Colin was
