There are always so many people to thank when I put out a new book.

My family, for putting up with the hours

I ignore them to get the words on the page. My teammates, for dealing with a 'oh, did you know this?' as I'm researching.

And mostly, this one is for Gama for sharing with me her passion for reading.

    Namaste.

    Introduction

People always ask me how I got 'into the health industry'. It's not like I took a traditional, medical path to wellness. I wasn't a healthy child. Twice a year, every year, I was down for weeks with pneumonia or bronchitis. I was in the doctor's office more than I was out. Or, at least it felt that way at the time.

Can't swallow a pill? I promise you, after the taste of some of those antibiotics, you will quickly teach yourself how to down monstrous pills with the least amount of water. (And never with soda, that was a nightmare.) I probably missed more school than I was there. I hated PE. I loved roller skating (yes, I'm showing my age) and being out riding our bikes. Ask me to participate in team sports or willingly stand there while you threw a baseball at my head, I wasn't having it.

By high school I'd finally started to outgrow the illnesses, or I was finally engaged enough in my studies that I ignored it all. Of course, by then, I'd also developed a serious allergy to most antibiotics. To this day, I can only get away with having a few days of a Z-pac before my body protests the drugs more than the virus.

Fast forward to my late 20's. I'd always been a slim person living on pizza, Dr. Pepper and candy bars in college and later pasta, rice, and breads. I can't imagine the sugar rush on my body nowadays. I shudder at the thought. My husband and I had decided we wanted to add to our family. I'd started working on changing our nutrition around years before, getting us both off sodas, introducing healthier foods. It was a slow process. And, I finally set foot in a gym. I started out with the workouts in Oxygen Magazine. Actually, no, I started out taking yoga classes. A few weeks in, I noticed I had definition in my triceps. It was then I ventured into the weights and machines using the workouts I'd been reading about. I read everything I could on the subject of fitness and nutrition.

I signed myself up for my PhD courses too.  Rather than continuing down the path of writing degrees I decided to focus on Holistic Health. I'd always been interested in the more natural methods of healing. Having grown up in the dialysis community (and actually where my husband and I met) I wanted to do something that actually helped people feel better and enjoy life rather than simply prolonging it. I wanted to learn about nutrition, figure out the best ways to stay fit, why we needed supplements and how to
