    SuperConscious Meditation - Ivan Kos

    Chapter One

    Research

Meditation is a popular practice all over the world. At least two hundred million people do meditate. Besides its great potential for reducing stress and boosting emotional well-being, meditation improves your sleep, mood, memory and may even prevent onslaught of Alzheimer's disease.

In recent years there has been a sharp increase in international research on meditation. Several prestigious universities in the USA spend a great deal of money on research in the field. It is known for a long time that meditation can reduce stress and increase a sense of tranquility and balance. Researchers at the American University of Massachusetts went one step further: they say that their research is the first that documented and proved that meditation changes the structure of the brain. Comparing images of the brain obtained by MRI, in patients who took part in an eight-week program of meditation and respondents who did not meditate, they noticed a significant difference.

Respondents who have meditated on average 27 minutes a day, said they felt a significant improvement, compared to those who did not meditate, and scientists could measure it. MRI respondents who had meditated, showed a higher density in brain regions associated with memory, self-awareness and compassion; and a lower density in the part of the brain associated with stress. Such changes were not measured in subjects who did not participate in the meditation program.

The researchers say this finding could facilitate the treatment of various mental disorders and illnesses, including PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder. ‘Transcendental Rebirthing’ method works great).

Meditation is a common practice believed to help reduce anxiety and stress, and boost emotional well-being. But how does the brain function during meditation? And do certain techniques have different effects?

There are numerous meditation methods; breath mindfulness, mantra, and guided meditation are among the list. But according to the study researchers, including Svend Davanger, a neuroscientist at the University of Oslo in Norway, all techniques can be put into one of two groups; concentrative meditation and nondirective meditation.

They define concentrative meditation as a technique that focuses on breathing, or on certain thoughts (mantra), which block out other thoughts.

Nondirective meditation is described as a method that focuses on breathing or on a meditation sound. But during this practice, the mind can wander.

All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while they were resting, and as they practiced one nondirective meditation technique and one concentrative technique.

They found that when participants practiced nondirective meditation, they had higher brain activity in areas associated with processing self-related thoughts and feelings, than when they were resting. But when subjects practiced concentrative meditation, their brain activity was nearly the same as when resting.

A new study by researchers in Wisconsin, Spain, and France reports the first evidence of specific molecular changes in the body following meditation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that shows rapid alterations in gene expression within subjects associated with meditation practice, says study author Richard J. Davidson, founder of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds and the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mind and the brain are two very different commodities. Recent development of the brain scanner has led to the discovery of several normal human beings, one of which even had an IQ of 126, and had a first class honors degree in mathematics; but instead the brain his head is largely filled with cerebrospinal fluid. In one case the cerebral cortex was 1 mm in thickness, as against normal of a half centimeter. Another had a brain the size of a walnut. Clearly, the mind and the brain are two different things.

I hope that this information will help to clarify the effects and benefits of meditation in everyday life, and reinforce your need to meditate.

    Chapter Two

    Beginning

In the beginning, that never was, there was Consciousness. This is the Creator that created everything (Actually; is creating everything every millisecond.), including time and space. This is the ‘material’ from which everything is made, while Consciousness itself is not made of anything. As it never became, so it will never end. It is present everywhere and in everything, IT IS EVERYTHING. It can never be perceived by anything, yet we can become one with it. Even this moment our consciousness is a part of it.

Scientists claim the present universe begun with the Big Bang, an explosion about 13.8 billion years ago. According to them the explosion lasted hundred seconds. The material that emerged from this explosion was 25% helium and 75% hydrogen.

From a spiritual point of view it can be said that the spirit has moved into space. Matter is the lowest level of the spirit in space (space being not what we normally understand it to be. Such a space exists nowhere). Science of today states that the matter is 99.9% empty space. Problem is that today’s science does not realize that space is not empty. It is filled with primordial matter, to the point that there is no empty space anywhere.

The chance of particles bumping together to form the right amino acid chain to establish one life-sustaining protein is 10 to the power of 130 or 10 with one hundred and thirty zeros. Paul Davies, who wrote ‘The 5th Miracle’, says that life requires hundreds of thousands of proteins and the chances of them all coming together at random are 10 to the power of 40,000.

Then the odds that millions of protein molecules happen into existence by chance, just as millions of DNA atoms also became viable at the same instance, and that they bound together to form millions of species of animals, plants and insects here on earth, would be 10 to the power of number + all the zeros you could put down on a piece of paper between here and a distant galaxy.

Probability that this universe came to be because of a chance is an absolute zero.

But let us come closer to home.

From the time of our conception until our birth, in only nine months, we go through three billion years of evolution – from protozoa to a human being. This evolution-creation process moves at lightning speed. Therefore, the average speed of growth is 10 million biological years per each 24 hours! Introduction of toxic chemicals and external drugs into this super sensitive system during the prenatal period greatly damages the intended process.

Single cell recreates itself over and over again with one purpose: to create this body of ours, a temple of the Holy Spirit, a home of the unbounded consciousness. Perfect intelligence builds our body from one cell into a beautiful form of about 70 trillion cells and guides the body’s functions throughout life. It does not desert us when we are born. It keeps us going despite the enormous abuses we heap on ourselves. Give this inner intelligence a chance and it will set things right.

Childbirth is a dramatic and powerful experience, but the child is prepared for it by millions of years of evolution. In normal birth, both mother and a child are pre-programmed by Mother Nature to work together, to make the birth as easy as possible. Hormones, biochemicals and energy flow between the two bodies. The biochemicals from the baby trigger appropriate reactions in the mother, whose body in turn signals the child. Plates on baby’s head move, head acquires the shape of an egg to reduce the diameter. This is like a well-orchestrated symphony orchestra playing the superb music of Mother Nature.

The catastrophe begins when man interferes. It is almost impossible for mother to give a birth to a child without accessing her own birth trauma on an unconscious level. She might be totally oblivious to those memories, but her body will react by blocking discomforting memories, thereby shutting off the natural processes of the evolutionary blueprint.

Many of so-called inherited qualities of a person may just be the reflections of birth trauma; tendency to be always late or early, avoiding to go to bed at night or getting out of bed in the morning, getting angry about unimportant things, etc. A child born under the influence of drugs and anaesthetic may experience problems in mobilizing the energy to begin new projects in life, and often cannot focus on a task. When birth is induced, much later the adult might not like being pushed into situations prematurely. The baby pulled out by forceps might later in life be enthusiastic initially in everyday situations, but later might not be able to complete the undertakings. Various phobias, like claustrophobia, and addictions might be the result of it. Or even such a thing as a counter-phobia where someone has an extreme compulsion to constantly prove one's bravery. Various sexual deviances might have the same origin.

Everything is just an overflowing, just a joy, celebration of existence with no purpose. The only purpose there is, is the one you make. Because our minds are fixed, they are dualistic. Can something be both right and wrong? Of course not. Not on this level of existence. Even though there is a lot of gray areas in life, we need to sort them all out into black and white, and chose the side. But the spiritual teachers are not concerned with the right or wrong, or true or false, they are only concerned with which device works, for each person.

If you take the religious statements as devices, as tools, then there is no contradiction, and there is no need for interpretation.

Meditation is a journey of our consciousness toward the Self.

One of common mistake humans make is an assumption we are all conscious on a same level.

Without experience of the SuperConscious, most of the teachers (gurus) fail on question of sex, money, fame, power, or drugs. Subconscious is million times greater than conscious mind. It knows us perfectly, it knows our most intimate thoughts, it knows our weak points, and this is where the temptation will be insidiously presented. Subconscious wants to manipulate and be in control of everything, at all times. Subconscious thinks in tri-dimensional live virtual pictures 24 h a day. It is like huge biological quantum computer, without reason or empathy. It has its own form of consciousness, however.

Chances of overcoming the temptation and hurdles presented by subconscious are near zero, without the help of our SuperConscious mind.

Some meditative schools and ashrams ask you to spend more and more time meditating. One extreme is seven consecutive days 24 hours a day. Another one is 10 hours a day for ten days. This kind of approach can lead to unbalanced and very disturbed mental behavior. Meditation, like physical exercises and the food is beneficial, but only in moderation.

Meditation is attaining how to be with yourself, how to be alone, and be mentally still; how to listen to your ‘inner voice’.

The psychic world and the lands of the Self are not something to be rushed into. You would not think of running a marathon without proper and long preparation. You would also want an advice and guidance from those who have done that successfully. Exactly the same principle is needed for the exploration of the Self and the subconscious.

So let’s take a closer look at where we are.

Ordinary ‘thinking’ involves about 60,000 thoughts floating through your mind every day. Great deal of it is total nonsense. These thoughts are not even yours; you have borrowed them from someone or something else. Take a look inside your memory banks; when was the last time you thought an original thought, your own thought? Chaotic thinking uses an enormous amount of your life-force, and rarely accomplishes anything.

Higher level thinking is Contemplation, when a person concentrates on one subject and examines it from every angle. Puts it on paper, consciously thinks about it, examines every possibility including worst case scenario, and then sleeps on it. Next day examines it again. Until solution comes.

Even higher is Concentration. This is where a person concentrates his mind on one object; be it physical, emotional, or mental.

Fourth level of the use of the mind is Meditation; an effortless concentration on nothingness. Everything else that comes under the heading of meditation nowadays, is just an attempt to meditate.

Fifth way is that of Nikola Tesla. When the door to the subconscious opens, a person can see his thoughts and project them in space, right in front of his/her eyes. The trick is to have this super-powerful subconscious machine under conscious control.

Sixth way: And then, there THOUGHTS of the SuperConscious mind, a mind that is also ours; better said, we belong to it.

Answers can be given: but they are all lies. Essentially, all philosophies are lies. You ask a question and the philosophy gives you an answer. If it satisfies you, you become a convert to the philosophy, but you remain the same. If it doesn’t satisfy you, you go searching for some other philosophy to be converted to, and you remain the same. Philosophies cannot reach the depth of you at all. You will not truly change; so whether you are Buddhist or Muslim, a Christian, Jane, Jehovah’s Witness, or agnostic, it makes no difference at all. The man who is going to the church, or to the temple, and to the mosque is the same man. Only faces are different, false faces behind their masks. Behind the mask you’ll find the same man, the same anger, the same aggression, the same violence, the same lust, frustrations; everything is the same.

Is Islam sexuality different from Hindu sexuality or a Christian sexuality? Is the Christian violence different from Islamic, or Judaist violence?

What is needed is a journey deep inside. World is in a deep crisis of consciousness.

    Chapter Three

    Life is a School

When a child is born his/hers consciousness is totally open. Everything is coming in and nothing is excluded. Just look at newborn’s eyes how open they are, how sound moves them, they are open to every sensation. To survive a child needs to learn to concentrate, to narrow his mind, to specialize, to learn more and more about less and less. The more narrow minded he becomes the more successful he will be. Every culture, in its own way, tries to narrow a mind of the child. Nobody is to blame. Without this concentration he/she will not be able to function, to cope with life. Life requires it, the mind must be able to concentrate; otherwise the survival is not possible. The narrow mindedness is an existential necessity.

At seven years of age the soft spot on the crown of the head of the child completely closes (In most circumstances. I have a friend who is now over 30 years old and his crown bones are not closed; soft spot is still there. I have recently also seen a child born with no soft spot.); the child is now substantially less influenced by the energies from above, the energies of the Universe.

Once Ego is formed, it denies that original open nature of the mind. It denies unconscious part of the mind, Ego becomes afraid of it, afraid of the Darkness. But in fact there is no boundary between conscious and subconscious mind, there is no brick wall, no gate. Boundary is created by vibration frequency difference. Subconscious mind means that part of the mind left behind, neglected, ignored, closed and imprisoned in darkness.

Now we are split in two and some are split into many. In early 1950 only about 230 cases of split personality were documented, in the entire world. In 2002, it is estimated, this # was well over 40,000,000 (forty million). We have become strangers to our own totality, and the effects of it can be seen all over the world.

Only the whole mind with an open heart powered by higher energy can begin to walk towards the totality of existence, super-consciousness, towards God, and eventually ascend.

Once the ego is formed, now it is the time to reverse the process and start open it up. So if you use thinking process to go into meditation you will never succeed. Here is the problem. We think all the time (about 60,000 thoughts per day) while meditation is non-thinking non-doing process. So a device or a technique is necessary to quiet down and stop the constant chatter. Various religious and personal development groups have developed endless techniques for transcending.

Here is another problem. Ego takes devices to be the truth. Every coin has two sides, and if we take a closer look we see that every coin has a third side also, the circumference; the side that is radically different. As below, so above. As here, so there, so everywhere.

A teacher can say something, and then say something opposite the next day. The device can be a tool to help accomplish our goal. All devices, techniques, are false, they are a trick, a con-job, but as long as they help on the road they are useful. If something is a cause of something else, it is never completely useless.

Once the barrier is crossed, only then can we see that technique was unnecessary.

Suffis have used Zikr, Dervishes dance, Zen practitioners use koans, Tibet and India have mantras, Rebirthing and Pranayama use breath, etc. Even various concepts of God are only a technique.

Our minds are not the same as the minds of 2000 years ago. Devices designed long ago have become old and useless. Today’s mind needs new and improved techniques. At New Horizons Unlimited we search for the ways to improve the personal development methods. We also create new ones.

The most helpful techniques, generally speaking, are the once least known to you. They create fear, an emergency. Only in the emergency can our mind be truly aware.

In a life threatening car accident, for example, a person is super-aware, where even time flow is altered.

Awareness means a mind that is conscious but not focused. True awareness is a consciousness of all that is happening.

The road to the subconscious is dark, unknown, fearful, irrational, dangerous, and illogical to the conscious logical mind, to the Ego, to you. Ego says; do not go to the subconscious, do not think about it, do not look at it, ignore it, just ignore it, it is better for me and for all of us.

Really now! Take a close, honest, look at this world, and at your personal life.

Meditation is also an effort to jump into subconscious. Meditation is traveling along the parasympathetic nervous system, with an intent to shut down, to mortify, the body and all of its senses and consciously enter through the door to the other side.

Just below (‘below’ is only a change in vibratory rate) is our Energy ‘Body’. Remember, our mind can create a body instantaneously at any level. The Energy Body is first felt as our life-force (Ki, Chi, Prana, Mana, Ruach, Ha, Natatoneyah,Vril, Barraka, etc.) and it can also be seen. We see it the same way we see our physical body. Here a person needs to remember that our senses are indirect.

There is also a Dream Body and a Spirit Body (or seven ‘bodies’ in Hindu and some other systems). The subconscious inner landscape can be traveled. There is nothing special about it. We do it every night in our dreams, but unconsciously; the Ego (you), unless lucid, does not know it is dreaming.

The entire evolution of life is a constant struggle to be more and more conscious. (Except for the small % of humanity that is consciously striving in the opposite direction). The ultimate goal being to become pure, absolute consciousness itself.

First step is to develop the double-arrowed attention, to become conscious of the object and yourself (subject) at the same time. The subject must not be lost, it must not be forgotten. Person needs to remember himself / herself and remain aware, even in a dream state and beyond (like death for example).

The subject and the object are two poles of the one thing.

The body and the mind are also not two things. Any movement of the body is impossible without the inner movement of the mind.

The body cannot be still without stopping the thoughts.

Body and mind are one energy. The body energy is denser, the frequency of the energy wave length differs but it is all one.

Our bones, our tissues, our organs, cells, molecules, atoms, quarks etc. vibrate with different frequency, all one within the other, all making up one whole. As below, so above. As microcosm (our body and mind) so macrocosm (The universe).

Meditation is non-doing, it is passive, but to achieve this non-doing one has to do much.

It is possible to be active and aware only when there is no longer any need of meditation, no need of achievement, no need to know it, or feel it.

If active, sympathetic, Yang, techniques are used, they must be pushed to the limit, where it becomes impossible to remain active even for a millisecond longer. Then the active technique turns into its opposite. We drop dead into passivity into non-activity. When the body becomes dead and the mind still, the energy moves upwards. The silence and lightness are the by-product of energy moving upward.

(He says: ‘Be silent and know that I am God’.). The finer, inner, higher vibratory energy bubbles upwards. The tension, stress, and heaviness are a by-product of energy moving downward.

In meditation often the whole body becomes silent. It disappears, it is not there; you cannot feel it. Now huge amount of energy is released upward, now we have extra energy to do something with. We must grow to heal the split, to become one, to become whole, to become sane, to break the bubble, the barrier, and walk in the right direction, on the path, the Tao, the Narrow Way.

Walk alone and do not be lonely, for actually you are alone, which means all in One….. We are Razor-Blade-Walkers, walking bare foot on the edge; on left side there is infinity on the right eternity; with no solid ground to put a foot upon. Like in our dreams; there appears to be a solid ground beneath your feet, but there is none. Both your feet, and the ground, are just a dream. When all desires are given up, when they disappear, then there will be no time, space, or causation. The secrets of birth and death are revealed only to a fortunate few. It is a rare person who can lift the veil of time, space, and causation and then know that past, present, and future are but commas and semicolons in a long sentence without a period.

Death is not the end of life, but a pause in a continuing story. Death is not something to fear, but is a function of life that should be understood. Accepting death is a reality that will help you to realize that this life here is temporary that the world is only a school; that you have come here on a journey to learn and grow, and then this journey ends. Death reminds you not to attach yourself to this world. Learn from the world and let it go. See your body as just an instrument. It serves a purpose and then its work is done.

Life is like a school; when you go to school you will see a teacher writing on a blackboard with a white chalk. Teacher can also write on a whiteboard with a white chalk but it would be meaningless; it will become invisible, you cannot see it. The world is just like a blackboard, without it you cannot be your inner consciousness.

Intuition is knowing something straightaway without knowing how you know it, while logic is the process by which you get the right answer, and also know why the answer is right.

The Divine is not only in you, it is in all the animals, it is in trees, it is in all animate and inanimate objects. It is everywhere in this infinity. Not only is it hidden in it, it is it.

Yes, life is a school and everything in it can become meditation. Unless everything becomes a meditation, the real deeper meditation will not happen. Meditation cannot be a part of a fragment of life. That will not work. Once you know how an act becomes meditative, you can transform all your acts into meditation.

So the real knowledge is that which we cannot forget; there is no way to forget it, it has become part of our being, part of our existence. A man who knows does not argue, he states; just says.

Whatsoever you say about others, shows nothing about others, it shows something about you. Every judgement is not a judgment about others, it is a judgment about you. Do not judge.

    Chapter Four

    Meditation

Meditation is not a moral concept, it is neither moral nor immoral, it is amoral. It is a science. Spiritual science.

Meditation begins in the mind. This is where you have to begin, but when the emotions and thoughts stop, mind ceases and you are beyond it; then the real meditation begins. Now you are meditating on nothingness.

But meditation also has its outer side. Use double-arrow awareness every millisecond of your life. Build it into everything you do and experience. Make the entire life a meditation.

If you are doing meditation without double-arrow attention, without self-awareness, without self-consciousness, you will get nowhere fast. Let me be even more specific. You should use double- arrow awareness every second, for the rest of your life, with everything you do. In the future, at some point, it will become your only hope, the only thing you can cling on to, the only thing you can trust.

O yes, you will forget million times, you will lose the thread; but pick it up, over and over again. A man is never defeated until he gives up.

Meditation is an inner science, it will help you in transformation if a technique fits; it will make you aware of what you really are. The mess you are in your mind, the madness, everything will come to light, if the technique fits you. Eventually that which is hidden comes to consciousness, the whole mess becomes visible. For the first time you will see yourself as you are. Do not be afraid; this is just the beginning. Remember; Your fear is his only weapon. There is no escaping from yourself. Meditation will show you what you are, and if you persist, it will show you what you can be.

One thing is to be understood, you cannot seek the truth. You can find it, but you cannot seek it. Seeking is a hindrance. When the mind seeks the truth, the very effort becomes nonsense, because the truth is here and now, and the mind is always somewhere else. The truth is always here, always was, always will be. The proper meditation technique is turning the mind from the future, or the past, to the present.

In meditation everything is holy, nothing is unholy.

Awareness means a mind that is conscious but not focused. Awareness is a consciousness of all that is happening. Concentration is a choice. It excludes all except its object of concentration. It is a narrowing. If you are walking on the street in a busy city you will have to narrow your consciousness, to walk safely. You cannot be aware of all that is happening, because if you are aware everything that is happening, you will become overwhelmed and confused. So concentration is a necessity; concentration of the mind is a need to live, to survive and exists. That is why every culture in its own way, tries to narrow the mind of a child.

Little children, as they are, are never focused. Their consciousness is open from all sides. Everything is coming in: nothing is being excluded. Child is open to every sensation.

The moment you narrow your mind and become conscious of one thing, you become simultaneously unconscious of so many other things. The more narrowed the mind is, the more successful the person will be. You will become a specialist, you’ll become an expert, but the whole thing will comprise of knowing more and more, about less and less. So the narrowing is an existential necessity. No one is responsible for it, no one is to blame.

For life to exists, it is needed that the new consciousness is narrowed. By the time we grow up, we deny our own mind and what it is capable of. We end up not using the total mind, we are using only a small part of it, a narrowed part, and the remaining, the major portion, will become unconscious.

In fact there is no boundary between conscious and subconscious. It only appears so, because conscious and subconscious minds operate at different frequencies.

The subconscious mind means that portion that is neglected, ignored, closed. This creates a division, a split, greater portion of your mind becomes alien to you. You become alienated from your own self, you become a stranger to your own totality. A small part of your mind is identified as yourself and the rest of the mind is lost. But the remaining unconscious part is always there, as an unused potentiality, unused possibility. This subconscious mind is potential. This mind will always be in a fight with the conscious mind. That is why there is always a conflict inside everybody in the world. It is in conflict because of this division, between the conscious and the subconscious mind. Only if the potential of the unconscious (unconscious only from the point of view of consciousness), the subconscious, is allowed to flower, can you feel the base of existence, otherwise you will feel nothing fully?

As stated, meditation is an effort to jump into the subconscious. You cannot do that by some calculation, based on some decision; because all of the compilations and thinking is by conscious mind. And Ego says you will go mad, do not do that; it will make you afraid of your own darkness.

But the subconscious mind is always around, and the conscious mind is always in fear of it, especially since the new modern technology inserted millions of subliminal and ugly things into it. The path to the unconscious is dark and unknown. To the Ego, to the reason, it will look irrational. To the logical mind it will look illogical, crazy.

If you think to go into meditation, you will never go, because the thinking part will not allow you to.

Meditation cannot be done by thinking. But the way ego is, it cannot do anything without thinking. That is why teachers have created necessary devices, the techniques and methods, to stop your thinking. Those devices are not needed; but you cannot enter with thinking, so the techniques, the devices, the tools become necessary. So I say that a device is an artificial tool. It is just a trick to put your rational mind at ease, so you can ‘jump’ into the unknown.

No technique, no method is cause of meditation. That is why many methods are possible. Method is just a device, just a tool. Every religion says that its method is the way, and no other method will do. Every religion is based on a lie. All methods are ‘lies’. This is why endless new devices can be created, new religious can be created, old devices become flat and useless. New ones are needed to keep pace with ever changing world. Now someone has to create a new lie, new device. Please understand, if something causes something good, it is never totally useless. New devices are doing the same work that the old ones were doing, but present day teacher will oppose the old teachings, and he/she will have to deny old devices that have become flat and meaningless.

Newborns will have to learn to narrow the mind. This narrowing will be helpful in the outside word, but it will become fatal inside. Once the process of narrowing the mind is completed, it would be wise to start opening it up.

The purpose of life is to become fully conscious, the evolution of life is to become more and more conscious, to unite conscious, subconscious, and SuperConscious aspects of our mind. Meditation means to be willing to open those dimensions.

When there is no object, and only consciousness remains, meditation is evolving to a pure consciousness, of being conscious of your own consciousness, of itself in meditation.

The effort is to become conscious of both the object and the source behind the perception. Consciousness becomes double-arrowed; you must be aware of the object and you must be simultaneously aware of the subject. You can say that the stream of consciousness is split in half, no matter if you are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, dreaming, thinking or having an emotion. The subject must not be lost, it must not become forgotten, when you are focused on any object.

The second step of meditation is for subject to forget about all objects and just be conscious. This pure absolute consciousness is the aim of meditation.

For the Ego to remain conscious, it needs to be aware of some object. If there are no outside objects Ego feels sleepy and becomes unconscious. When there are no outside objects Ego turns to the inside ones. Many people who become obsessive thinkers cannot fall asleep, as the objects, the thoughts, continue to be there.
