    INTRODUCTION

I originally wrote this short story back in 2011 after watching a documentary about the Saemangeum Seawall, the world’s longest man-made dyke, measuring 33 kilometers (21 miles), a dyke that was constructed to link three headlands South of the South Korean industrial port city of Gunsan.

I was blown away by the magnitude of the project, and even more impressed when I learned that after the estuary was completely filled, an area of about 400 square kilometers (150 square miles) was added to the Korean peninsula, making it one of the biggest land reclamation projects in the history of mankind. It was about two-thirds the size of Seoul. That’s four times larger than Paris and five times bigger than Manhattan.

It was at that point that I came across a statement by the then President of South Korea Lee Myung-bak, who emphasized that the completion of the Saemangeum Seawall was the starting point of building a new future for Korea. More specifically, he said: Saemangeum Seawall is not a simple seawall but an economic expressway for Korea to advance beyond Northeast Asia. This is an unprecedented project that will change the map of Korea. We now need to move forward by building a new civilization on this vast sea before us.

Continuing my research I found out on the Internet an article called Saemangeum: a new global city that explained in more detail what the ‘Saemangeum Project’ was really all about: Saemangeum aims at becoming an environmentally friendly city, combining economy, industry, tourism, leisure, international affairs, environment and culture. The five basic keywords in establishing the city are global, green, water, mankind and culture. Global refers to a place where the world’s manpower, money, and technology gather, while green" is a core base
