For most couples, meeting the parents is one of the first serious steps in a relationship. This is where you go from casual dating to the threshold of a long-term relationship. Meeting your girlfriend's parents is therefore a big deal in your relationship. It is a big and necessary step forward. I don't care how alpha you are at work or amongst your friends—if you truly care about this girl, you are bound feel at least a little nervous. It's only natural.

First of all, depending on how subservient your girlfriend is to her parents, family disapproval can end your relationship right then and there. Even if it doesn't, your relationship is sure to hit some rocky turns along the way. Disapproving parents can put tremendous stress on a relationship. Secondly, if everything goes well, her parents will be a part of your life as well. They might be your future in-laws, and your children's grandparents. If you are not on good terms with them, it is going to affect your life in a lot of ways.

Needless to say, it is in your best interest to have her parents on your team and not against you. Whether the future of your relationship hinges on their approval or not, life will be much easier if her parents are on your side. The only thing you can do to get this outcome is put your best foot forward and hope for the best.
