Crawling out of bed, Cass padded barefoot across the floor to stand at the window. Naked, she didn't worry that the neighbours would see her. The window looked out on a sea with nothing else for as far as she could see.

If the house was perched atop a cliff, or settled on a spit of land, she couldn't tell. Straight down the side of the house, she saw water. Waves crashed against it, far below. It was impractical to build a house that went straight into the water, but she doubted the Devil worried about what was practical. No doubt his brand of magic could overcome the effects of wood rot.

Cass studied her reflection in the window. She looked the same as always. A little bit fat, and ordinary. When would the Devil fulfill her wishes? Did he intend to wait until after she gave birth to his child?
