L. M. Quinpool

My name is Laura Regan and I write under the name L. M. Quinpool, author of two series - Children Of the Amulet and Calendrial.I'm descended from two very artistic families which include writers, actors, musicians and graphic artists. I write under the name Quinpool because my great great uncle John Regan wrote under the name John Quinpool, author of "First Things In Acadia". Re-using the name gave my grandfather and his siblings great joy and I'm proud to carry the name on.My first series Children Of the Amulet has three books already published in paperback through Ottawa publisher Baico Publishing. I hope to have my fourth book in the series I hope to put into paperback soon but for now it'll only be available with the other three on e-book. There are more already written in the series but they just aren't up to my personal standards and therefore not ready for print or digital books. The first 2 of my second, more Canadian series, Calendrial, is available through e-book only until such time as it's possible to publish in print. There are currently 10 in the series and I hope to have the remainder finalized soon.In everyday life I have an hours BA in Linguistics and a General BA in Psychology and currently work for Kumon Learning Centers. I'm also a web designer, music lover, photographer, and graphic designer. I enjoy working with children of all ages, sizes and abilities and helping them reach their fullest potential despite "lables" or "social roadblocks" they may be faced with. I write about children because I believe they are an important of the past present and future. I believe it is imporant to encourage them to shoot for the stars and I hope my books will empower them with the strength to change the world.I very much hope you like my books and will pass the name Quinpool on to your family, friends and associates. Thanks to Smashwords and Baico Publishing for making my publishing dreams come true.LoveLMQ

    Chapter 1

    Trouble at the Neighbours

Spencer Addison woke from a deep sleep with a feeling of trouble surrounding him. Something was wrong. He could feel it.

Suddenly, Spencer heard a car door slam. He jumped out of bed, almost tossing his cat, Vulcan, off with the covers, and jumped to the window. The car next door was just pulling out of the driveway.

Lucy, Spencer whispered. She's in trouble.

Lucy Kensington was Spencer's best friend and had been since birth. Lucy's father, Jonathan Kensington, and Spencer's parents, Scott and Serena Addison, had been best friends since childhood and had apparently wanted their children to be the same. They had disappeared when Spencer and Lucy were a year old and were presumed dead, but had made arrangements to keep their children together by arranging for Spencer to be adopted by Cole and Ann Gilbert who were friends of Lucy's mother Rose. But while Rose had upheld that wish to date, things began to change last August when The Magical Community had reached out to Lucy and Spencer and invited them to begin their education in magic at Calendrial School for the Magical Arts.

Rose and her second husband, Jim Kelson, feared/hated the magical community and had hoped to keep Lucy, and, by extension Spencer, away from it. But when Calendrial called, Ann convinced Rose that she couldn't keep the children from their birthrights.

So, with great reluctance, Rose sent Lucy to a Magic school and the adventure began. It was a year full of learning and accomplishments, mysteries and discoveries. And Lucy and Spencer had flourished in it until they returned home. Jim was less moved by Ann's arguments or Lucy's happiness and insisted on keeping the Magical world from his children, Lucy's half-siblings, Abby and Alan.

Since June, Jim had been making small, backhanded comments about Lucy not returning to Calendrial, though Lucy and Spencer tried to take no notice. They were pretty sure that any idea Jim had of refusing Lucy her right to be in the Magical Community, would eventually be countered by Ann. Neither Lucy nor Spencer wanted to believe that Jim, or Rose, would really try to stop Lucy from returning to Calendrial. Yet something told Spencer, as the full car drove away in the dead of night, that Jim was giving it a shot.

Helplessly, Spencer watched as the car disappeared down the street, then turned as he heard a scratching at the door. Vulcan looked back at him and meowed. Spencer nodded and slipped on his shoes.

This way, he whispered to the cat as they left the house and walked over to Lucy's. That's her window, he said to the cat, pointing at the third floor window, It's always unlocked.

Vulcan leapt up to a low tree branch by the side of the house, then turned back and meowed at Spencer.

I'm fine, Spencer said. I've climbed this tree all my life. I'll be right behind you.

Carefully, Spencer climbed the tree by the house to the third floor window and let himself and Vulcan in.

Very little was gone from the room. Apparently they weren't supposed to be gone for long.

It's not like Lucy to be this careless, Spencer said, picking up one of her spell books that lay on the bed. He jumped as he heard a rustling sound at the window.

A large owl had landed on the window sill.

Mercury, Spencer sighed. Lucy's in trouble. Jim's taken the family away.

    Mercury hooted questioningly.

I don't know where, Spencer replied. But they left in a hurry. She was in the middle of reading and... his voice trailed off as Vulcan returned from searching the house and meowed loudly.

Spencer followed him to a closet barricaded by a chair, from behind which came soft cries of another cat.

Venus, Spencer said, opening the door and scooping Lucy's cat into his arms. What happened?

Venus just cuddled into Spencer's arms, still meowing sorrowfully.

    Spencer returned to Lucy's room.

You have to find her Mercury, Spencer said. Jim's up to something. Then I'm taking her to the Canadian Magic Council for protection. They must be able to do something. Anyone who would drug his step-daughter and leave her cat locked in a closet has to be held accountable.

Mercury hooted reassuringly then flew off.

Did he hurt you? Spencer asked, setting Venus down on the bed as Vulcan jumped up to inspect her.

Venus meowed softly as Vulcan began to wash her ear affectionately.

    We'll find her, Spencer promised.

Vulcan looked up from his washing and meowed.

Mercury will find her, Spencer said. Then we'll take her to Manotick for protection. Surely Kestra's or Ethan's parents will know someone who can do something. Come on, let's go back home. If Jim is up to something, I don't want to meet him alone when he returns.

    * * * * * *

Spencer dear, calm down, Ann said as she put two bowls of milk down for the cats. Jim wouldn't hurt Lucy. Rose wouldn't allow it.

But where are they? Spencer demanded. Why did they leave so suddenly?

I don't know, Ann replied calmly. But I'm sure we'll find out and it's no reason to lose your head. She put a cup of hot chocolate in front of Spencer. You know Lucy can take care of herself. She will be fine.

As soon as Mercury comes back I'm going to send a letter to Kes and Ethan, Spencer said. The Magic Council has to do something.

Spencer, slow down, Ann said. I know you're worried but...

She's in trouble Ann. I can feel it! Spencer said. Jim's been talking about not sending Lucy to Calendrial in September.

But you know if you panic, you won't think straight, Ann replied. Why don't you invite Kestra and Ethan over and have them talk you down. I'm sure Lucy will return soon. Rose wouldn't have left with so few items if they weren't intending to return. Trust me, darling. You'll see her again.

Spencer frowned as Ann left the room. He knew he might be over reacting, but he knew there had to be a reason he was so worried.

Kestra Kilborn and Ethan Avery were Spencer and Lucy's best friends in the Magic Community. They'd met on the train ride to the school in the Rocky Mountains and the four quickly became inseparable. As the year progressed, the bond strengthened, especially after they discovered they'd been unwittingly initiated into a secret society with the receiving of gifts of strange pendants, each marked with a different symbol of an ancient Greek God or Goddess. The giver had been a mysterious stranger that no one else remembered seeing, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. The owning of the pendants had side effects, not the least of which was that the four had been marked with a scar on their dominant hand in the shape of the same symbol as was on their pendants. The mystery had continued throughout the school year and, though many things were still unclear, it was becoming clear that the purpose of the society involved battling against the Evil Grey Wizard who may have killed Jonathan, Scott and Serena in battle. The benefits to all this was that Lucy and Spencer had connections and immediate backup in times of trouble.

Mercury returned late the next morning with no news of Lucy. Kestra and Ethan arrived in the late afternoon.

Mom says not to panic. She will bring your concerns to a friend at the Magic Council, Kestra said.

Ann thinks I'm over reacting, Spencer said. "But Venus says Lucy was barely awake when they left and, like I said, I found Venus in a closet. It feels
