    Foreword

The Other Side of Some Where explores the possibilities of another dimension that we pass into on our journey to heaven. How many dimensions or lives must we pass through until we learn enough to get to heaven? In this dimension, we are given another chance to do things right that we failed at before. On this side, we are able to make up for things that went wrong or unjustly hurt us before.

This particular story centers on the life of Jessie Marie Harris who is the mother of a young daughter and twin boys. Her husband Kevin is the type of husband your mother has nightmares about you marrying. When Jessie is involved in a horrible car crash, she passes right through to the Other Side. What is on the Other Side and do we remember our previous lives?

These answers and the answer to so many other questions, that have become common to us, will be answered through the life of Jessie and her journey through a portal known only as The Other Side of Some Where.

    Chapter One

    A COOL KENTUCKY MORNING

The autumn leaves glistened as the sun slowly rose on a crisp, cool Kentucky morning. The silence, as always, was almost sacred. The only interruption came from cheerful songs of the birds and occasional wildlife. She believed that this was the best quality the area had. The mornings, before the hustle and bustle of human life interfered with the glory of nature, had shown it’s self to be unique and breathtaking.

She stood on the front porch in a cross between a trance and meditative state with her arms crossed in front of her chest. A swirl of steam seemed to come from her lips as her breath exhaled into the cool fall air. Jessie seemed even more immersed in the morning than usual as she looked out across the woods in front of her home. She loved mornings. Choosing her favorite season would be as if choosing a favorite child – there was not one: Each one was cherished and loved for its own characteristics and personality.

She looked across at the field in front of her house and realized the leaves were starting to turn colors. That meant it would not be long before the snow came. She loved playing in the snow, but she hated the cold that went with it. Usually it meant she would be freezing her butt off while under the house wrapping and thawing out water lines. She had never been taught how to repair plumbing, yet it was one of many things, which came naturally to her. Where others had attended school and studied to gain such knowledge, she was just born knowing how to do it. It always amazed her dad that she could work on cars or build things without having to be taught. She would sometimes joke with him and tell him she learned it all in a past life. He would just shake his head and smile.

As she stared into the field in front of her modest home, two deer stepped cautiously into the opening in front of her house. She smiled as she watched them look around and sniff the air. She wrapped her sweater around her a little tighter and then stood still so she would not chase them away with movement.

The slam of the screen door startled her and her pupils shrank as she turned to face the person that interrupted her morning sabbatical with nature. The deer jumped at the noise and bolted back into the woods. It seemed as if the magic was lifted from the air. She turned to look behind her and saw Kevin balancing two mugs of coffee.

The morning sun glowed behind and around him arranging a golden aura of energy that could never be emitted naturally. Mornings were when he was at his best, in Jessie’s opinion. She felt a slight twinge of guilt for her thoughts when he handed her a mug of coffee. He did have his good points … at times. It was funny, as in sad and not funny as amusing, how Kevin could redeem himself with one morning cup of coffee.

She gratefully reached for the steaming cup of coffee he offered her and held it between her cold hands. She loved the aroma of coffee in the morning. She sighed, took a second, and mentally thanked God for her morning.

Good Morning Beautiful he said, with his invariable air of confidence. He had no doubt she would let his night of drunken slurs, which were aimed towards her, slip by without consequences. She hated arguing and he not only knew it but also utilized it. She did whatever she could, to keep peace in the family and he always used this to his advantage.

Good morning Kevin, did you sleep well? She turned to face him and smiled. The magic of the morning was broken and reality was handing her a cup of coffee. Reality was Jessie Marie Harris was married to a self-absorbed alcoholic who thought he was Gods right hand man. He found God on one of his numerous acid trips in youth and formed his own religious beliefs based upon that. He was reasonably attractive, in a hippy type way. His blonde hair was baby fine and shoulder length. His brown eyes, which always seemed to appear condescending, were cloudy from his years of drinking and drug use. Kevin was maybe a couple of inches taller than Jessie was and had a slim, lanky build. Kevin took great pleasure in telling her he was chased by many women throughout his life before and after her. However when she met him he looked like a lost puppy that no one wanted to take home.

Her entire life had been picking up strays, rejects and underdogs and trying to provide them with a better life. She should have stuck with animals because when they became abusive she could have put them in a cage. Her empathy for the tales of his hard life had made her want to console and assist him since she, herself, had known many heartaches and hard times. She stood in the glorious Kentucky morning, holding a cup of coffee given to her by a man who had been screaming in her face the night before, that she was a demon and an abomination. The only physical sign of his drunken rage was the strong and pungent odor of alcohol that permeated through every pore of his body and burned her noise. Well, that and the quiet and sadden look on the face of Jessie Harris. Kevin had his two seconds of kind thoughts in her mind and she desperately wanted to escape before he ruined it. He had a knack at consistently doing that.

She smiled and directed her gaze downward as she turned to go inside her modest house. The magic of the morning had dissipated so she retreated into her home where she lived with Kevin, their twin sons and her daughter. She leaned down to pick up toys strewn on the floor by the twins as she headed to check in on them. Matt and Mark usually were so full of energy they would play until they fell asleep wherever they were. They were two active four-year-old boys that normally forgot to pick up their toys and hated to sit still so they could eat their food.

She would never forget how overwhelmed she was when the ultrasound showed two little boys instead of one. Earlier that day, she had packed up all of Kevin’s belongings and sat them outside her front door. She had also pulled his stereo out and intended to call his dad to come get everything. She didn’t think she could stand living with him anymore. However, after the ultrasound she drove home and pulled all his belongings back inside. She felt she could not manage things alone with twins and a two year old. Besides that, if living with him was this hard, trying to share two boys while living apart was certain to be harder. She already knew how hard separation was on children. She also knew how hard it was with only one parent in the house. As she tearfully pulled his things back into the house, she remembered thinking that she would just try harder and maybe he would quit drinking. Funny, but if she knew that day what she knew right now – she would have never drug his things back inside the house which she had bought on her own.

Jessie’s first husband, Michael, had cast Elizabeth away when she divorced him. Michael never called or visited her after the thrill of tormenting Jessie had passed. The memories, of how he used Elizabeth to antagonize her after their divorce and how he would torment her with threats of taking Elizabeth, would always be painful ones. Later she found out that he had met another woman and bothering her or visiting Elizabeth was not important anymore. She did not want the same thing to happen to the boys, so she vowed to attempt to make this work out for everyone. She had had hoped Kevin would be a good father to the boys and that he could become a good father to Elizabeth as well. Unconsciously she allowed a small sigh to escape her lips. Things never turn out the way you envision yet why did it go so terribly wrong is this case. What had she or the kids ever done to bring this heartache on them?

With the toys picked up, Jessie headed to the kitchen to put away the dishes and clean before going into work at the pottery. She truly hoped he would go about his own business without coming in to attempt to carry on a conversation with her. However, deep inside of her she knew that this would not happen. While wiping out the refrigerator, she noticed it was lacking the key ingredient in Kevin’s life. His supply of beer was depleted and she knew he would be demanding more from her even though her payday was still a few days from now. She still had many of the house bills to pay and she did not see how she could afford to purchase beer again this week.

As if on cue, she heard his footsteps behind her as she reached for a bottle of Windex under the sink. Regardless of how her heart felt, she attempted to prepare for his touch yet she still recoiled in disdain when he came from behind and pulled her to him. Life was miserable for her, but if it meant allowing the twins to have their dad, then she would get through it. What are you doing Sugh? She could smell the burning stench of old alcohol on him when he whispered in her ear. God she hated that smell!

Cleaning Kevin, you know I like to clean things before going into work! Please let me get everything done so I can feel good when I come home! She tried to twist in a way to move herself out of his reach, but failed when he became aggressive. Jessie! Do not pull away or take that tone with me. I think you are forgetting who the man of the house is! He grabbed her arm tightly, which was his way of showing her it could be a lot worse if she wanted to push it. The Heavenly Father tells women to be submissive to their men. Your husband is to you, as God is to man! Okay Kevin, she whispered as she surrendered to his bear hug. Now that’s a good wife, Sugh as he rocked her in his hug. She was thankful he could not see her face as two huge tears rolled down her cheeks. God, she hated him even being close to her! She hated him lying in bed next to her and she hated how he ate like a pig at the table! Moreover, at this moment, she hated surrendering, but she did not want to wake the boys and Elizabeth with yelling and fighting. Jessie looked towards their bedroom doors, quickly ashamed that she had put them and herself in this position in life. It was funny how the beginning of a wonderful morning could be ruined in less than five minutes. She remembered her peaceful mornings before he came into her life and being so happy she would hum as she cleaned. In those days, the deer would not be chased away and she would stand for a long time before she would get Elizabeth ready for day care. Only she was stupid because back then she thought being lonely was the worst thing in the world and now she knew different. He had said and done so much to her that all the love in her heart had been chased away and filled with loathing instead. She was trying to keep her wedding vows to God but Kevin made it impossible to love, honor and respect him. It appeared the only thing he was good at was making her life miserable.

She stood in total surrender, endured her torment as he rocked her, and half listened as he praised her for acting right. It was as if she was a disobedient child rather than a 30-year-old woman. Although her mother and father had drank heavily and argued excessively, Jessie was ignored instead of degraded on their weekend binges. Kevin drank constantly, so his binges would have to be defined as his every waking breath. It was common to find him in the floor, where he had passed out the night before, with food on his chest and all around him. Why couldn’t she see her own future and had the ability to divert this life altering disaster?

Born not far from where she lived now, she was considered different not only by her own family, but by her friends as well. She had been born with the ability to read people, to see future events and play with what others considered wild animals. When she was younger, she could make things move and play with fire without being burnt. Maybe that was why she felt she had to rescue everyone…she knew what it was like to be rejected.

Jessie had always been able to see and communicate with those that had crossed over. This was evident to everyone when her parents and she would visit other people’s houses and she would tell them what their deceased family was saying. She was publicly scolded and told never to do this again by her family. Therefore, after awhile she learned to hide what her family thought was a shameful curse. She began blocking her gifts one by one so she could be normal and fit in with the rest of the world.

Her thoughts came back to the present abruptly as Kevin stopped his rocking and whirled her around. Don’t you forget to go south and get me a case of beer before you come home from work! I only have a six-pack to get me through the day and I am going to be bored. You know how I get when I am bored and it just isn’t right to make you and the kids suffer because there is no beer in the refrigerator. His eyes stared unblinking as he delivered his veiled threat.

Kevin, you know I don’t get paid until Friday and this is Wednesday! We just bought four cases last Friday and that is almost a case a day! We really have to start cutting back because the bills and groceries are getting higher and we only have one income. Automatically, she knew she had just made a mistake as she felt the muscles in his arms tense up and his eyes took on a dark and evil look about them. If she could learn to shut her mouth and not argue over things because she knew she would lose anyway!

Kevin looked at her with so much anger behind his eyes, only he kept a steady voice that almost sounded offended. Jessie, I don’t ask for much here, I don’t eat much or add hardly any expense to the household by being here. Why is it when I am down on my luck you have to make me feel lower than I already do? Damn it! I drink cheap beer instead of asking for some decent shit around here and yet you start your bitching and complaining! As his speech progressed, his voice rose higher and higher and the tone kept getting sharper. What do you think I am supposed to do all day while you are gone? You have people to talk to and be around and I am stuck here all day with no one! I don’t even have the car to drive and see my friends because your privileged ass drives it to work instead of letting me carry you there! That is the appreciation I get around here for all I do without for my family!"

Kevin, we cannot afford for you to take the car and drive around all day visiting your friends. We can’t afford the gas! Besides, you are supposed to be watching the boys while I work instead of out drinking with Cory and all your friends. I cannot afford a babysitter and all our bills on one income! Besides that Kevin, you don’t have a driver’s license! Your last DUI got them pulled for a year! Now she had really made things horrible. She did not shut up when she should have, and it seemed her mouth kept going on as if it had a mind of its own. She never knew when to shut up and the only thing she could count on when this was over with was being broken- hearted and crying. Life sucked so badly and if she had any sense she would have realized when she had it better on her own. If it weren’t for her children, she would have exited this world a long time ago. Kevin, on cue, upped the argument to the next stage.

He looked her straight in the eye and in a very cruel voice stated, You know, I could have any woman I want when you walk out that door to work but instead I am a decent, God-fearing man. I don’t know why I stay with you except those boys need someone decent in their lives that they can be proud of! I PROMISE YOU JESSIE! If I walk out that door right now, I will not be sleeping alone tonight. You will be the one alone, wishing you had appreciated the good man you chased away. You will be the one the boys will hate for chasing me out of their lives. I took on that girl of yours and let her stay here even though her own daddy didn’t want her. You don’t appreciate a damn thing Jessie Marie! YOU will regret it when I finally get enough and walk out that door!

Jessie was so used to the comments, the slurs, and pain that a tired expression came across her face. Kevin, this is not about divorce or sleeping with other women. This is about trying to get by on the one paycheck that I bring into this house. It is about the kids, because you need to be sober to watch them and fix their meals. I already fix their plates and put them in the refrigerator so all you have to do is microwave them, but you still need to be sober to do that. If you fall asleep, you will not be able to make sure they don’t go out the door or get hurt and then be unable to wake you. Now she felt the sting of tears gathering in her eyes. Trying to use logic never worked. In fact, nothing she ever said or did to improve the situation ever worked. She was always wrong and made out to be a stupid, lazy, ugly whore that was taking advantage of his kind nature. He was always the victim and what was truly scary was that she thought he honestly believed he was. Somewhere along his life, he gained the ability to believe the crap he put out. He was always the victim and yet played the part of a martyr very well.

Once again, her thoughts were abruptly interrupted, only this time with pain. His fingers buried into the soft flesh of her arms as he roughly pulled her in front of his face. His face was dark red and tiny specks of spittle splattered on her face as his enraged face contorted while he growled, I was better off without a woman! I know I was happier and had more things! Look what you have done to my life! The heavenly father will punish you for every injustice you have inflicted upon me. You will be left behind when my father returns with all of the sinners to suffer in agony when the boys and I are ‘taken up’ to be saved from Armageddon. You will be left to endure the rise of hell for what you have done. A woman knows her place and if she doesn’t, she will be damned to the fires of hell forever!

The boys are mine too, Kevin! I have taken care of them since the day they were born and I don’t believe they will turn away from me! As far as Elizabeth is concerned – you didn’t take her in – we took you in! You have never acted like a father to her! I take care of these children and my boys will know that as the truth! she screamed.

Really, is that a fact Jessie? A woman is nothing but a vessel for a man’s seed to grow. They belong to the man and when they can care for themselves, they will turn away from you! They will see you for the sorry piece of crap that no one wants to be around.

OKAY KEVIN …. Stop …. I will buy you the beer. If I have to write a cold check, I will. Just please, please, leave me alone. I have to go to work and I cannot take another one of these arguments before I have to go to work. Last week, I was late because of one and almost lost my job and we can’t afford to lose the only income we have. He turned loose of her arms and the sharp pain gave way to a so familiar throbbing in place of the sharp pain of his grip. So you’re blaming me for your being late to work? You always have to blame someone else Jessie! I don’t know if I want you touching my beer, you stupid bitch. To end it all, she softly sighs and replies, I am sorry honey, and please let me get you your beer. Her voice sounded fake and tired even to her own ears. He wouldn’t care how he won his battle as long as he won and he got his beer.

Kevin walked out of the room with an abused and offended look on his face. How does he do that? He always makes himself the victim and she always ends up feeling as if she has done him wrong. She sat at the table and attempted to stop the sobbing coming up in her throat. Her body jerking but no sound is audible. If any sound could be heard, it would be the splattering of huge tears splashing on the wooden table. Her long blonde hair covered her face as she took a moment to get herself back in control of her emotions. She had to push away the fear of another relationship falling apart and try to continue with the morning as if nothing happened. She had to keep her family together. She promised God forever and she didn’t want to break another promise to him.

As she slowly looked from behind her hair, she saw Liz standing in the hallway with the corner of her rose bud nightgown clinched tightly in her small hand. Her soft gentle face had a sad expression as if she could feel her mother’s pain. Jessie slips her hands under her hair and wipes away the tears in the same swoop when she flips her hair back away from her face.

Hey munchkin comes out in an almost normal voice as she grabs up Liz and kisses her neck. Liz giggles uncontrollably while trying to push her mommy’s face away. ‘Wait, wait mommy! Jessie sits Liz upright in her lap and smiles as she says, What’s up munchkin butt? Elizabeth’s sweet voice was almost begging, as she said, Please don’t cry mommy because I think you are pretty and nice and he was being a mean man." Elizabeth reaches up to kiss one of the red marks on Jessie’s arms. She was such a caring and tender baby girl that Jessie hoped no one would ever make her feel less than the wonderful child she was.

Awww, I am fine baby girl! My contacts just got some dust under them! That’s all! Elizabeth looked confused at what Jessie had said and innocently asked, Did your contacts make him yell at you, mommy?

No, no baby girl, just forget it because it is nothing you should worry your pretty little head about.

For an eight year old, Liz was entirely too mature for her age. She had watched too many arguments where Jessie had been browbeaten and verbally abused. As always, she would side track the question and make Elizabeth smile. Of course not, my silly little LIZABEE! Jessie replied. She grabbed Liz, swung her around, and charged into Liz’s bedroom with her. Here she would deliver enough belly blubbers on her tiny tummy to leave her giggling breathlessly. Her squeals and laughter were good for Jessie’s sagging spirit and in spite of what had taken place earlier, Jessie found herself smiling at her daughter.

While she was blubbering Liz’s belly, two small pajama-clad boys leapt onto Jessie giggling. She was quickly outnumbered as Matt began to tickle under Jessie’s arms with little fingers that felt like they were digging to the bone. Mark was sitting on Jessie’s face so her screams of surrender were muffled by his Spiderman pajamas. He was busy tickling under her chin as if he was digging in the dirt for fishing worms. Elizabeth was sitting on her ankles tickling her feet and giggling breathlessly as she now had the upper hand on her mommy. Jessie felt like Gulliver when the tiny people of Lilliput tied him down with miniature ropes. There were smiles and giggles from the four of them up until she had to get ready for work.

As she was taking her shower, she started to feel like she shouldn’t go to work today. She had a feeling of doom that she could not quite put her finger on. If she did not get ready and go to work, there would be no bills paid, no groceries bought, and God forbid that Kevin had to do without his beer. Sometimes she wished he would go out the door and be in someone else’s bed that night, as he threatened. She also wished he would just be gone forever.

As she got out of the shower, she looked in the mirror at her naked body. It really wasn’t that bad was it? She had a scar from where the twins were taken by C-Section, and her stomach did poke out a little. She
