I looked around in wonderment as I drove through my old neighborhood. The last time I'd seen the place was four years ago, before I headed off to college. There were large mansion like homes nearby now and a small shopping center off the corner where a field used to be. Like the neighborhood, my life had changed quite a bit as well.

My parents had split up and my mother remarried, to a man I had yet to see. All I knew was that his name was Paul, and he was supposedly the tall, dark man of my mother's dreams. I had also heard that there were new neighbors that had moved in, an interracial couple, which was strangely ironic for me as my mother used to be quite the racist.

I turned another corner and smiled at the thought. Come to think of it, bits of my mother’s racism were inside me. I'd always avoided people who weren't white, I could count the number of non-white friends on one, two-fingered hand. To add, I'd never dated or hooked up with a black man, always figuring they were some thug types. I finally turned and pulled to a stop on my old driveway.
