About this ebook

Maria and George are in a struggling, mundane relationship. As Valentine's Day comes around, Maria recalls the previous year's horrendous attempt, or lack thereof, that George treated her with. He believes that it's a made up, corporate holiday that represents greed. Maria ddoesn't really care for Valentine's Day either but with friends and family always bragging about their escapades, she feels as though she's had enough.

When Maria opens up to George, he brushes her off and the two have a heated confrontation. In the end, he sends her a little gift, with a note: Let's do something dirty with chocolate. Maria is lost as she wonders what her husband has planned and rushes home to find the door to her home slightly ajar.

An uneasiness crosses her as she steps in and sees her husband bound to a chair. Three big black men are frozen as they stare at her. They seem to know her, and they know her husband's name. Maria wonders if her husband wants her to fulfill a drunken fantasy they shared. The three big black man grin and unwrap their chocolate bars...

I glanced up at my husband nervously as I plated dinner. His eyes were still glued to the TV, watching a basketball game and having a beer. We had grown apart over the years and I began to wonder if I was no longer desirable to him.

Valentine's Day was just around the corner and I wondered if it would be like last year, a complete and utter dud. He had come home with a couple of half dead flowers and a small heart shaped box of chocolates. There was no surprise gift, no spontaneous trip, or even a passionate night for us.

    Dinner's ready, I called out.

Huh? Okay, yeah, I'll be there in a couple of minutes. You've got to see this, Tennessee is actually showing some signs of life, George, said, barely even glancing at me.

Don't take too long, the food is going to get cold, I replied as I grabbed a pair of cups.

    Yeah, yeah, George grunted back.

I shook my head and poured some water in both cups before placing them on the table. After sitting, I glared at the back of George's head. A part of me knew that this Valentine's Day would be no different than the last. In fact, I wondered if he would be able to top our last experience.

George, I said while clearing my throat.

Hold on, just one more minute, George replied as he cheered his team.
