Hot Chips

About this ebook
Hot Chips is a very eclectic collection of children's poems that are unlike the works of more traditional writers Some are gentle. Others have a quirky edginess that will appeal to those with a more abstract view of children and life. Sixty two poems cover a multitude of subject ranging from dislike of a single pea left on a dinner plate, to a catastrophic situation brought on by a little girl's obsession with hot chips. There are fishing stories involving stocking the bathtub with a giant carp caught in a creek. Or, when the weather is bad and the fish aren't biting, a little boy might try fishing in in the toilet. There are poems of humorous tragedy because Little Dirty Danny wouldn't wouldn't clean his room. Every poem has a different theme or point of view from what one might find in more traditional children's poetry. While this a collection of situations and stories as seen through the eyes of young children, there are enough twists and turns to keep adults interested and entertained. Read the first entry "Hot Chips" to your kids at bedtime, and be prepared for what happens.
Steve Melton
Steve Melton has authored an eclectic assortment of works. “Presidents and Kings” is his first published novel. "Searching for Aunt Bea" is his latest offering. Soon to follow will be "Pasadena Thunder," a fictional work about a little old lady who races a Dodge Muscle car on the streets of Pasadena. Other works waiting in the wings are a collection of novelettes. Several volumes of children’s poetry. And a volume of stories from his childhood growing up in the fifties and sixties in the middle class suburbs of St. Louis. Steve is a graduate of the University of Missouri where he studied journalism, art and photography. He served four years in the United States Air Force as an overseas communications specialist. He earned his teaching credentials form Lees McRae College in North Carolina. He retired after twenty years of teaching Junior High and High School Social Studies. He does volunteer work at the Missouri Home for Veterans in St. Louis. Inspiration for his characters comes from his father and other military warriors he has had the honor to know and associate with during his life. Steve's knowledge of Blue Ridge Mountain life and culture was the inspiration for another soon to be published novel, "Blue Ridges - Silver Streets." He laughingly refers to himself as a “real renaissance guy” with interests in writing, music, cooking, photography, comedy, physical fitness, Biblical teachings and a growing relationship with Jesus Christ

I’m so glad you have this book
It’s lots of goofy fun
Tales of kids and pets and stuff
And funny things we’ve done
Maybe you’re a bigger kid
Or just a wee bit small
Maybe you’re a shorter kid
Or maybe you’re real tall
Maybe you’re an older kid
Who knows a lot of stuff
Or maybe you’re a younger kid
Who’s not quite old enough
Maybe you’ve been everywhere
Or never left your home
Maybe you have lots of friends
Or spend your time alone
Read this book and you will find
Kids a lot like you
Kids who dream and play and act
And feel just like you do
And me, I’m just an older kid
Who likes to sit and write
And hopes your parents take the time
To read to you tonight
Tonight before you go to bed
I’ll tell you what to do
Spend a little time with me
I wrote this book for you
Hot Chips
Our little Chelsea
Just likes to snack
Offer her chips
She eats the whole pack
She likes the hot ones
That burn up your lips
She likes to say
I like hot chips
But now there’s a brand
Nobody should buy
So flaming hot
Nobody should try
They come in a bag
That’s fire engine red
With skulls and flames
One taste and your dead
But our little Chelsea
Has fire proof lips
She always says
I like hot chips
But these are so hot
They burn holes in ships
But Chelsea just says
I like hot chips
Give me some please
I heard what you said
But I need a snack
When I go to bed
And Chelsea just stood
Her hands on her hips
We all heard her say
I like hot chips
But it was too late
They sent her to bed
Poor little thing
She never got fed
Next morn she ate
A ton of French toast
But she wasn’t full
What she wanted most
A hand full of chips
From that fiery red bag
She just ignored
That big warning tag
Eating these chips
Can make you go nuts
Your kids might be born
With multiple butts
In tests on these chips
Scientists find
That brains melt away
And some will go blind
But Chelsea just sighed
A smile on her lips
She said it agaib
I like hot chips
