0.25x0.25.jpgsymbol.jpgIntroduction
I started writing poetry late in life when my wife and I were blessed with our first grandchild. Many writers use a pen name when they write a piece of material, and although I choose not to do so, if I had, it would have been Papaw Boo. When our first granddaughter was born, her parents had a black Lab mix called Boo Girl, and until they determined Maddie was allergic to dog hair, Boo Girl was her protector and favorite toy. Consequently one of the first words Maddie learned to say was Boo. So, Boo became hello, good-bye, and surprise. Then later usually used in hide-and-seek games, where the hidden could be found, oddly enough, in the cabinet where the potato chips were stored. It was also when I became Papaw Boo. Those were the first of many happy times spent with our grandchildren, and those times and many since and a great many to come are why I write. I try to convey a message to the reader and avoid just putting words on a page. To the extent that I am successful at this endeavor is up to you.

Hold me tight and speak soft and low
So the sound of your voice, is one of the first things I know
If I cry, in the darkness of the night
Your gentle touch will make everything all right
I’ll learn to crawl, but won’t go far
Before I stop to see just where you are
And if you will take me by the hand
I think someday, I can surely stand
And as my childhood comes to an end
And a new chapter in my life will begin
I know there’ll be times we’ll disagree
About little things, between you and me
But, if you listen closely to what I say
It may be the same thing you said yesterday
I’ll make my own way, but it would be nice
If I could sometimes ask for your advice
And no matter what I say or do
There will always be a place in my heart for you
Soon time will move at a faster pace
And draw its heavy hand across your face
When that time comes I’d like you to know
I’ll hold you tight and speak soft and low

Hey diddle diddle say the cats in the fiddle
And the cow jumped over the moon
Hey little girl we know you’ll be
A big girl
