One Stop Horror Shop - Heather Beck

Are you sure we can afford this? Karyn asked for the hundredth time that day.

Max was hunched over the living-room table. He had a pencil hanging out the side of his mouth, a calculator in his hand and several sheets of paper in front of him. Max scribbled something down on the paper and then looked up at Karyn.

"We can’t afford not to take Quentin’s offer. Come here, Max said gently, pulling out a chair for his wife. Do you remember the first day we met?" he asked with twinkling eyes.

It was at Jimmy’s Diner, Karyn replied, sitting down in the chair adjacent to Max.  A mutual friend had set us up.

Do you remember why he set us up?

Karyn smiled widely. He set us up because he knew we had a lot in common. I know where your questions are leading, Max.

Good. You’re on the right track. Let’s keep playing. Tell me what common interest you and I both shared.

We both wanted to own a magic shop one day, Karyn said in a quiet, nostalgic voice.

And we still do. Don’t we, Karyn?

    More than anything.

Then we have to go for it. Lines of determination spread across Max’s face. The only thing he’d ever wanted more than a magic shop was Karyn. Now that they’d been married for over two years, Max thought it was time to go after his other dream. The best part was that this other dream included Karyn as well. He knew she wanted to own a magic shop as much as he did.

What about the mortgage we’d have to take on? Karyn asked, biting her lip in concern. We just paid off the mortgage on this house with the help of your parents. Won’t they be upset if we get ourselves back into debt?

It’s hardly debt. It’s a business that will reap much profit. If you’re really concerned about taking a loan from the bank, I can always ask my parents for help again.

No! Your parents have already done more than enough for us. They should enjoy their money, not give it all to us.

It’s not like they don’t have enough, but I know you’re a proud woman. We won’t ask my parents for any more money.

I want us to make it on our own.

If we do this, we do it our way. Max placed his hand in the air and smiled. Scout’s honor.

Karyn laughed. You were never a Scout.

No, but I do stand by my word. Seriously Karyn, we can do this. I know we can.

    Okay, I’m in.

You better be. We’re a team now.

I know. Karyn kissed her husband gently on the lips. I’d better start making dinner. Our neighbors are coming over tonight and I want to make something special.

    "I’ll help you, but
