    Blue Water - Heather Beck

This is pathetic, Lucy sighed, while sipping on her lemon iced tea. You’re pathetic, she added, pointing a perfectly manicured nail at Mandy.

I’m not pathetic, Mandy mumbled. I’m just shy.

Shy? Lucy sneered. There are two things wrong with your reasoning, my friend. First of all, you’re not shy when it comes to your job as a tourist guide for one of Hawaii’s best hotels. And second, you’ve known Eddie and me for such a long time. You shouldn’t be shy around us. Yet, I find myself being forced to sit in a crowded corner to avoid my own brother!

I’m not avoiding Ed, Mandy replied defensively. I just like sitting here. If Ed happens to be at the other end of the bar, then so be it.

I always have to ignore my brother when I’m with you, Lucy pointed out, somewhat angrily. I’m sick of it! He’s with Mr. Roberts, the most boring man in the world. It’s my duty to save Eddie. Lucy quickly finished her drink and stood. Come on.

Mandy looked sadly into her friend’s eyes. Although Mr. Roberts may be boring, he owns a multi-million dollar cruise company. I’m just a mere employee with a half-decent job – a job which I only got because of your connections. Ed and I are nothing alike.

    Five years.

That’s a quarter of your life. You should know by now that social economic status means nothing to my family or me.

I know that the Curran family are the kindest millionaires to have ever walked the sands of Hawaii, Mandy said sincerely. Even if my poor social standing doesn’t bother you and Ed, it sure bothers me. I’m just that girl who works at Hotel Hawaii and lives in the shack across from the beach.

I never realized how bad your self-esteem was. Is it your silly views that keep you away from my house?

Mandy could feel hot tears burn her eyes. She wanted to speak but knew that tears would pour down her cheeks if she opened her mouth. Mandy nodded to avoid talking.

Maybe I can help with your self-esteem issue. I can start by saying that you have wonderful qualities. Hotel Hawaii didn’t award you with employee of the month for being a crappy person! They gave it to you because you’re so enthusiastic about your work and always go beyond the call of duty. The smile on Lucy’s face grew wider as she continued to speak. "I can also help by inviting you to dinner at my house tonight. My whole family will be there since my father just got home from Guatemala. I’ll
