    Chapter One

Amanda looked out of the window as the car sped by. Unlike Beverly Hills, there were no lush palm trees and magnificent houses lining the roads. San Francisco wasn't as posh as her former home. This roused embarrassment inside her. Her Aunt Meredith talked nonstop since she picked Amanda from the airport. Amanda hadn't seen her since she was twelve. Now, she gazed at this strange woman in her weird clothes and badly-tended hair with terrible edges and pimple-ridden face. Amanda knew that she was still running her small fashion store and wondered how she could look so terrible while being a fashion designer. There was no way she would make it big in the fashion industry if she kept on designing the things she did. No one would want to wear that. She loved to dress eccentric and designed similar outfits for her clients.

Unable to control it, Amanda started picturing the skincare routine she would recommend to her Aunt. Her face was in terrible need of one. Huge, puffy bags drew straight lines under her eyes. Her eyes were slightly blackened in circles. God, she must've been working so hard and rarely sleeping, Amanda thought unconsciously. She could still remember the times when her mother would send money to her Aunt. Amanda's mother would groan about her Aunt's carpenter husband.

I told her. I warned her not to marry that man. Now, look at everything she's going through, she'd say after yet another call for help from Aunt Meredith. When her Aunt couldn't stand the jabs anymore, she stopped calling for help. Amanda thought it was for the best. Her mother's caustic tongue was terrible and often pushed the people around her away. She was mean to their domestic staff, too. Once, Amanda had seen her throw a plate of soup at the cook because the plate had a stain on the side. Amanda sighed. That perfect life was gone now.
