    I Caught in the Act

I heard something from the back!  It sounded like someone was screaming in pain! Detective Benjamin says.  Just be careful Mike.  The Captain said that if he finds out you’re still chasing these bogus leads, he’s going to have your badge! Detective Smith says.  Fuck him!  That old man lost his spine years ago with that Watson case!  I’m telling you Charlie, this is the guy!  My source told me that he saw this guy leaving the last crime scene!

Detective Smith shakes his head in frustration and disbelief.  Mike, you’re on thin ice as it is!  If the Captain finds out you’ve been investigating this case, following this lead after several bad leads and without his approval, I don’t know what will happen! he says.  Detective Benjamin chuckles and says, Yeah and when I put a demented killer behind bars, I’ll have the Captain’s job!  Charlie, I need your help here, so back me up!

Detective Smith sits in his seat and sighs.  He looks at his watch and holds the radio microphone to his lips.  Mike, you know I have your back.  It’s just that...I can’t keep doing this whole disobeying orders thing anymore.  Unlike you, I have a family and I don’t want to risk losing my pension over a tip from someone that we both know is a scumbag.  I know that you believe that this guy is THE guy, but he just doesn’t fit the profile.

Detective Benjamin rolls his eyes in disbelief.  He thought, Just because the suspect is Black, that doesn’t mean he’s not a serial killer!  Granted, most serial killers are White, but this is our guy!  What the fuck is going on with Charlie?  I swear, Charlie has become a real pain in the ass ever since he got married!  He’s too cautious now!  He doesn’t want to take ANY risks.  He keeps this up, I’m going to ask for a new partner.

Detective Benjamin looks at the house and crouches towards the ground.  He looks at a window on the ground floor and sees the shadow of a man behind the window blinds.  Oh shit! Detective Benjamin whispers as he quickly ducks down behind a trash can.  He quietly looks around the area, hoping that he was not seen.  I don’t think he saw me he thought.

Detective Smith nervously waits for Detective Benjamin.  He impatiently taps his foot and asks, Mike!  Mike!  What did you see?  What happened?  Do you need backup?  Detective Benjamin whispers, No, I’m OK.  The suspect almost saw me while you were lecturing me!  Stop distracting me and let me see what’s going on here!  I want radio silence until I say something!

Detective Smith is angered by Detective Benjamin’s order.  Who the fuck does he think he’s talking to?  I’m not some inexperienced rookie!  I’m getting sick and tired of Mike’s shit!  Fucking asshole!  I’m just trying to help this guy and he talks to me like I’m a child!  He keeps this shit up, I’m going to fill out the paperwork and get me a new partner!  I can tell he doesn’t want to work with me anymore and I think it’s time for a change he thought.

Detective Benjamin looks towards the house and the man is no longer there.  He slowly moves towards the steps that lead towards the rear entrance of the house.  As Detective Benjamin approaches the rear entrance, he hears a faint whisper.  Please, don’t do this.  There’s got to be another way.  Detective Benjamin leans towards the door and hears and eerily calm laugh.  My dear, it’s too late.  This is your release.  I’m releasing you.  We will all be released!

The woman lies tied to a board that leans against a wall.  I can see that the pill I gave you is starting to take effect.  That is good.  Once you are asleep, I will release you.  You will feel no pain and if you truly lived a good life and everything you’ve told me is true, you will be free the man says.  He moves closer to the woman as her eyes close and her head collapses.  An evil smile appears on the man’s face as he lifts the woman’s head.  Farewell my sweet.  All of that beauty wasted on a harlot.

Detective Benjamin quietly approaches the rear entrance.  His heart races as he reaches for his gun.  It’s really quiet in there.  I hope I’m not too late.  After what this scumbag did to those women, he deserves to die!  That’s not up to me though.  As much as I’d love to get rid of this motherfucker, I have to bring him in and let the law deal with him he thought.

Detective Benjamin slowly reaches towards the doorknob and turns it.  Locked!  Shit!  It figures!  I had to try.  OK, it’s now or never!  I can’t wait any longer!  I also don’t want Charlie giving away my position!  Once I kick in the door, I’ll call Charlie and we’ll bust this asshole he thought.

Detective Benjamin positions himself and crouches in front of the door.  Remember, keep your weight on your back foot as you kick he thought.  Detective Benjamin kicks the center of the door with his right foot, opening the door.  As he kicks open the door, he gasps in shock as he enters the room.  The gleam from the knife almost blinds Detective Benjamin as it is held in the air.  The knife is thrust into the face of the woman on the board.

Detective Benjamin is frozen in shock as he witnesses this horrific act.  Blood splatters from the woman’s face on to the floor.  The knife continues to dig into the woman’s skin as the man moves the knife around the outline of her face.  Detective Benjamin tries to utter the words, Stop or I’ll shoot! but is at a loss for words.

Blood continues to run down the woman’s body.  She lies motionless on the board as her face is cut.  Almost done the man coldly says as he lifts her skin off of her face as he moves the knife.  The sound of the woman’s skin separating from her facial muscles sends a chill down Detective Benjamin’s spine.  He stares at the man as he slowly moves the knife around the woman’s face.

Detective Benjamin continues to stare at the man in horrified shock.  The man hums as he moves the knife across the woman’s face.  Detective Benjamin stops staring at the man and shouts, Police!  Put down the knife and step away from her!  Put down the knife or I will shoot!  A spine-chilling laugh is heard from the man as he stops moving the knife.  He removes the knife from the woman’s face and drops it to the floor.

The man stares at the woman on the board and smiles.  A tear rolls down his cheek and he wipes it away.  He says, Your pain, your suffering is over.  You are now free.  You have been released.  Detective Benjamin thought, What the fuck is he talking about?  He quickly dismisses his thought and shouts, Slowly step away from the woman and turn around!  Now you piece of shit!  Now!

The man slowly turns to face Detective Benjamin.  He grabs on to the woman’s skin, completely pulling it off of her face.  Detective Benjamin looks in horror as he hears the skin being pulled off of the woman’s face.  Her blood splatters across the floor.  Detective Benjamin steps back so none of the blood gets on to him.  He points his gun at the man and shouts, Don’t you fucking move!  You sick piece of shit!

The man smiles at Detective Benjamin.  He holds the woman’s face in his hand as blood drips on to the floor.  He says, Detective, how can I help you?  Please excuse me as you have caught me at a very inopportune moment.  Detective Benjamin shouts, Shut the fuck up!  Don’t say a fucking word to me!  Charlie, call for an ambulance!  This woman needs medical attention fast!  Get in here now!

The man looks at Detective Benjamin and smiles.  He says, Allow me to introduce myself.  My name’s Thomas Wilson.  You can call me Mr. Wilson.  Thank you for allowing me to finish my work here.  I thought you were going to ruin things.  You almost prevented me from finishing my work here.  Detective Benjamin shouts, Shut the fuck up!  You fucking piece of shit!  You fucking psycho!

Mr. Wilson continues to smile at Detective Benjamin.  He says, I heard you coming.  I knew you were here.  I felt your essence.  Your essence is full of anger and hate.  Isn’t it a shame how beauty is wasted on a harlot like this?  How did you feel when you saw me carving this little harlot?  This little harlot was a VERY bad girl.  You DO know she’s a harlot, right?

Detective Benjamin stares at Mr. Wilson as he speaks.  He tries to keep his hands from shaking as the holds his gun.  Detective Smith enters the house and says, Mike, the ambulance is on its way but I don’t know if they’ll make it in time!  He looks at the woman on the board and almost gags.  Oh my God! Detective Smith says as he stares at the area where the woman’s face was.  Detective Benjamin says, Check to see if she’s still alive.  I’m not letting this fucker out of my sight!

Detective Smith reaches into his coat pocket and places a rubber glove on his hand.  He places his fingers on to the woman’s neck and nods his head.  She’s dead.  I feel no pulse.  Mr. Wilson smiles and says, She has been released!  If she truly led a good life, she will be free.  Her essence will be with the others as they are always with us.  It is my duty to cleanse the world, to show the glory, the joy of being released.  We will all be released!

Detective Benjamin is enraged by Mr. Wilson’s comments.  He moves closer to Mr. Wilson and asks, What did you say?  Mr. Wilson looks at Detective Benjamin then at Detective Smith and back to Detective Benjamin.  He says, Jessica has been released!  She has suffered throughout her life and had to be released!  Did YOU know her Detective?

Detective Benjamin grabs Mr. Wilson by the throat and squeezes it.  Mr. Wilson smiles at Detective Benjamin as he raises his gun to strike him.  Go ahead, hit me!  Cleanse yourself!  Strike me!  Make me your penance for your sins! Mr. Wilson says and laughs.  Detective Smith rushes towards Detective Benjamin and tries to restrain him.  Dammit Mike!  No!  Let go of him!  Let the courts deal with him! Detective Smith shouts.

Detective Benjamin continues to squeeze his hand around Mr. Wilson’s neck.  Mr. Wilson struggles to breathe and weakly says, Go ahead, do it!  Release me.  I will be free!  Free from this world and all of its filth and pain.  Others will continue my work after I am released.  Others will follow.  Everyone will know the glory, the joy of being released!  We will all be released!

Mr. Wilson’s eyes begin to roll back in his head.  Detective Benjamin smiles and says, You deserve to die you piece of shit!  He continues to squeeze on to Mr. Wilson’s neck and ignores Detective Smith’s pleas.  Detective Smith finally pulls Detective Benjamin away from Mr. Wilson.  He smiles, coughs and says, I guess now is not my time.  My work must continue.

Detective Benjamin pushes Detective Smith away from him.  Mr. Wilson collapses to the ground, gasping for air.  Detective Smith immediately rolls Mr. Wilson on to his stomach, placing his hands behind his back and handcuffing him.  Detective Benjamin says, I don’t know what came over me.  I just...I just...  Detective Smith interrupts and says, We’ll talk about this later!  Let’s get out of here and book this piece of shit!

Detective Benjamin nods his head in agreement.  He helps Detective Smith lift Mr. Wilson off of the ground.  As the detectives lift Mr. Wilson off of the ground he shouts, ’She has been released!  Jessica’s essence is with us!  She is now free!  The harlot is free!  Detective Benjamin says, Shut the fuck up! as Detective Smith sighs in frustration.  I can’t deal with this shit anymore! he thought.

The ambulance arrives as Mr. Wilson is being read his rights.  An EMS technician enters the house and gasps at the sight of Jessica.  She looks in horror when she sees Jessica’s face on the floor next to her body.  Oh my God! she shouts.  The EMS technician tries to compose herself as she prepares to remove the body from the board.

Mr. Wilson looks at the EMS technician and smiles.  She has been released! he says as Detectives Benjamin and Smith escort him out of the house.  The EMS technician looks at Mr. Wilson and asks, What?  Mr. Wilson says, She has been released!  Jessica’s essence is no longer in pain!  She is free from her suffering!  Her essence is with us!  The EMS technician says, Get this sicko out of here!  Please get him out of here now!

The detectives lead Mr. Wilson down the stairs.  Detective Smith purposely stands between Mr. Wilson and Detective Benjamin as they walk towards the car.  If Mike gets close to this guy, he’s going to kill him!  Either Mike is disgusted by this man or he knows this woman.  Anyway, I’m not going to lose my pension because of Mike’s temper!  I’ve never seen Mike THIS angry! Detective Smith thought.

Mr. Wilson smiles has he is escorted to the car.  He stares at Detective Benjamin and chuckles.  Detective Smith looks at Mr. Wilson and thought, This motherfucker is one sick guy!  He skinned that girl...I mean Jessica!  She doesn’t have a face!  What would he have done if Mike didn’t stop him?  This is too much to deal with!  Detective Smith opens the back door of the unmarked police vehicle and notices that Detective Benjamin’s hands are clenched into fists.  Mike, calm down! he says.

Detective Benjamin looks at Detective Smith and starts to calm himself.  He thought, Charlie is right...for once.  I need to calm down.  I can’t let my emotions get the better of me!  What if Charlie snitches on me?  What if this sick fuck says that I tried to choke him and they find my fingerprints on his neck?  I’d be fucked!  Internal Affairs would love that shit!  They’ve been up my ass ever since I busted one of their own guys that tried to rape a 14 year-old girl!  Bunch of scumbags!

Detective Benjamin avoids looking at Mr. Wilson as they get closer to the car.  He thought, I don’t know what got into me!  I’ve seen numerous crime scenes, dead bodies and shit, but this guy...this victim...Jessica...I pray it’s not HER.  I couldn’t tell with her skin peeled off of her face.  Can’t be!  Not her!  This ‘Mr. Wilson’ is a sick fuck!  The way he speaks, the way he spoke to me just...affected me.  I felt like I was in a trance when he looked at me and spoke to me.  It’s like he MADE me choke him.  This is so weird.

Mr. Wilson enters the car and smiles.  Detective Smith closes the door and quickly glances at Detective Benjamin as he enters the car.  Good, he didn’t try to do anything to this guy.  I can’t have my partner try to kill a suspect and stand there doing nothing.  Mike is a loose cannon and can’t be dealt with.  I’ve tried, but I’ve had enough.  This was the straw that broke the camel’s back!  When this is all said and done, I’m asking for a new partner! he thought.

Detective Benjamin places the key into the ignition and starts the car.  He avoids looking at Detective Smith and Mr. Wilson as he drives towards the police station.  Detective Smith picks up the handset from the radio and says, I’ll call this in.  He says, This is car 18, over.  Detective Smith patiently waits for a response as Mr. Wilson smiles at him.  What a creepy guy he says.

Detective Benjamin nods his head in agreement and stays silent.  What is wrong with Mike?  He looks so...distant Detective Smith thought.  He is concerned by Detective Benjamin’s silence and says, This is car 18, Detectives Benjamin and Smith arriving with a suspect.  We will be there soon.  A voice is heard from the handset saying, OK car 18, we’ll be waiting for you.  Good work guys.

Detective Smith places the handset back on to the radio.  He sits back in his seat and sighs.  Mr. Wilson smiles and says, Don’t feel bad Detective.  There was nothing you could have done for that harlot.  She’s not worth your pity or sorrow.  On the other hand, THIS detective here...he could have saved that harlot.  He saw the truth in the blood.  He saw her being released.  He watched as I took my trophy and showed the world how ugly this harlot really was despite her external beauty.

Detective Benjamin slams his foot on to the brake.  He places the car into Park and quickly unbuckles his seatbelt.  Detective Benjamin opens his door and drags Mr. Wilson out of the car.  Detective Smith struggles to unbuckle his seatbelt as he tries to exit the car.  Mike stop!  Don’t do it!  He’s not worth it! he shouts as Mr. Wilson is pulled out of the car.  You fucking piece of shit!  You sick, demented fuck!  You’re not going to make it to the station after what you did!  I’m going to take care of this myself! Detective Benjamin shouts.

Mr. Wilson laughs was Detective Benjamin speaks.  Detective Benjamin takes his gun out of its holster and Mr. Wilson smiles.  He takes the gun and presses it against Mr. Wilson’s head.  Mr. Wilson shouts, Do it!  Do it!  Pull the trigger!  Release me!  Enact your vengeance!  Make me pay for what I did to Jessica!  Do it!  Do it now you coward!  Don’t be afraid, unleash your anger and do it!  As Detective Benjamin starts to pull the trigger, he feels Detective Smith pulling him away.

Detective Benjamin turns around and instinctively punches Detective Smith in the face.  Detective Smith staggers back and tries to regain his footing.  Detective Benjamin shouts, Now I’ll release YOU! as he points his gun at Mr. Wilson’s head.  Mr. Wilson whispers, Go ahead Mike, release me.  Show the world who you really are!  Show the world the joy of being released.  Release me...  Detective Smith regains his balance and tackles Detective Benjamin, knocking him to the ground.

Detective Smith wrestles the gun away from Detective Benjamin.  He shouts, What the fuck is wrong with you?  I’m NOT going down with you for this!  Let’s get this fucker to the station already!  We’ll book him then go home!  Detective Benjamin looks up at Detective Smith and exhales.  He starts to calm down and says, OK.  OK.  You’re right.  I’m sorry Charlie.  I don’t know what got into me.  There’s just something about this guy...

Detective Smith gets off of Detective Benjamin’s body and stands.  As Detective Benjamin starts to stand, Detective Smith punches him in the jaw.  That’s for hitting me asshole!  Now we’re even! he shouts.  Detective Benjamin rubs his jaw and says, Sorry Charlie...good punch by the way.  Detective Smith smiles and tries not to show how much his hand hurts.  Mike’s jaw is like granite!  I’m lucky I didn’t break my hand! he thought.

Detective Smith walks over to Mr. Smith, surprised
