Everyone had already arrived when Amanda showed up. Right away, she spotted Chad already getting cozy at one end of the pool. His arms were outstretched along the cement, while a half-empty beer bottle stood within easy reaching distance of his fingers. His buddy Keith was there too, mimicking the same posture with his flabby, pale belly sticking halfway out of the clear water. His eyes were closed at the moment, while his head nodded to the beats of a nearby black stereo away from the water's edge.

And Michael. What was there to say about Michael? All of them had known him since childhood. It seemed essential to invite him if they were all going to have a little get-together on a warm summer afternoon.

To her right, Amanda heard a sigh.

"A pool party?" Nina whispered into her ear.

Yeah. That's what I said, wasn't it? A way to relax and beat the heat.

"No no. You said a party. Not a pool party."

    What's the difference?

"Well, there's a big difference, Nina pointed out. It's outside in the sun ... and gross. Do you know how contaminated that water gets when there's three people in it? How do you know they've taken a bath recently? It's disgusting."

Amanda tried to hide her frustration. I just wanted you to get out and meet some people.

    I've met them all before.

Well, you can meet them again. Like, what's wrong with that?

Do you know how quickly my skin will burn?

Amanda rolled her eyes. They make lotions for that. I'll let you use some of mine.

It has to be a certain brand. Medical strength.

We'll just put several coatings on.

    Won't work.

Amanda stopped in her tracks and clenched her fingers into tight fists. "Come on, Nina. I know what you're doing."

Explaining to you why being out in the sun and water is unhealthy for me.

"Or, just coming up with silly reasons to not hang out with us. Maybe you'll get a little sunburnt, but so what? And you'll have to take a shower after being in the pool, but so what? It's not like you're going to get infected with anything. We clean it every week. It has a really expensive filtration system and everything. It's the cleanest pool you'll ever step in."

At least she listened to some of my fashion advice, Amanda thought to herself. She wasn't a total dark spot underneath the high midday sun, but she wasn't a blossoming flower either. Nina had one favorite color, and it was black. The absence of all light. On some days she might've resorted to a dark gray, but in reality it was no different than any of her other black clothes. Nina just had a skewed perspective of the spectrum of ideal colors, and dark gray and black were usually indistinguishable to Amanda's eye.

Today, she was wearing a black t-shirt and darkly colored hip-hugging jeans. So, instead of looking like a pale ghoul, she resembled a groupie of some heavy metal band. It was a small improvement, at least.

Why do you like wearing that color anyway?

Because it fits me, Nina said with poise. I like this color. I've always liked it.

Don't you ever want to get a tan?

"And risk getting skin cancer? No way. I'm not some girly-girl, Amanda. You know that. Besides, I didn't even bring a—"

    Hey, what's she doing here?

Amanda turned her attention to the pool. The song had ended, and Keith's eyes were upon her darkly dressed friend. She didn't like the look he was giving her.

Nina's my friend. I invited her just like the rest of you.

Keith laughed. I didn't know this house had a demon infestation. Look out, Amanda. She might pull out some old-ass book and say some curse when you aren't looking. I'd be watching my back.

Hey, my girlfriend can invite whoever she wants, Chad said. Besides, she's known Nina forever. They go way back.

Did she have skin color back then? And she better not be stripping down to some swimsuit. I didn't bring my sunglasses.

"Enough, Keith. Stop being an asshole," Amanda butted in.

Yeah, so what, man? Michael added from his end of the pool. Nina's cool. She's hung out with us before. Everyone has their own style. Big deal.

Amanda turned to her boyfriend. "You have anything you
