Human beings are social creatures. We crave the company of others, especially those who are like-minded—those whom we get along with well and can share experiences with. In an ideal world, we would be surrounded by such people. Our lives would be full and our experiences enriched, because we got to enjoy them with people we like.
Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. We live in an imperfect one, full of imperfect people, which means we often end up interacting with difficult people. Theodore Roosevelt said that the single most important ingredient of success is knowing how to get along with people.
But can we get along with someone who is unwilling to meet us halfway? How do we cope with being around people that are constantly angry, negative, or critical?
While it is human nature to want to fight back or withdraw when someone attacks us, doing so doesn’t garner the best results. The difficult person will likely behave even worse, and we will end up feeling guilty about our behavior, or even worse—depressed or stressed. So, what is a person to do?
