Lauren drowned beneath a stack of folders and files, and couldn’t be assed to give a shit.

It was an hour before she could leave the stuffy office she called hers. Tucked away on the top floor of a dying mall, the military recruitment office saw about as much life as a morgue. Gone were the days in which wayward teenagers looking to serve the country would accidentally stumble in and sign their lives away. Hey, in exchange they got free college, so that was something…

That was the shit that lured Lauren into the world of the military. For ten years she had trained and served, although she had never been deployed due to being assigned this desk job as a recruiter for the past, what, five years? She could barely remember anymore. The days came and went like the visitors to the mall downstairs. The moment they stepped in, they turned around and stepped right out again.

The only people who came in to sign-up were those who fully intended to do so. This meant Lauren didn’t have to do much convincing.
