Synopsis: An overweight woman, tired of her life and job at a bank in New York, spends weeks trying to find a mail order husband through a marriage broker and when she does, all of her fears about there being no love and a lot of work, surface. Her fiancé does nothing to dispel the fears when he meets and greets her at the railway station. After a few weeks she starts to think about returning to her home back east, when something happens that ends up as a blessing in disguise.
As she sat across the desk and listened to Saul the marriage broker, Sally Owens suddenly realized that she might be on a fool’s errand.
The marriage broker had been her mother’s idea but it was becoming increasingly clear that finding a husband through his services was not as easy a task as her mom had led her to believe.
First of all, she could forget finding a mate anywhere near New York, that much was clear, not that she wasn’t aware of this fact before she undertook this endeavor. New York men preferred to find their own wives, face to face. That did not bother her, she was ready to leave the big city.
Twenty-two years of living on the same street was enough. She had grown bored. Bored and weary of the hurtful comments regarding her weight. She was overweight, she knew that. However, she did not care and God willing, she would soon find a husband that did not care either.
The one thing that did concern her – the one thing that she had not considered – was the competition. The ‘English Roses’ as the broker called them. They were coming to America by the shipload according to him and if he was to be believed, each one was more beautiful than the next.
Saul was explaining, Now you have to remember that these girls are not all destitute and without options as we typically think when we think of the brides from England. No, some of them are quite well educated, some come from wealthy families, many are looking for adventure. Some have had a husband die and they just want to get away from the memories. I guess what I am saying is that the competition is fierce. Now I am not saying this to discourage you, I assure you that I will find you a husband but it may take a little time.
Sally nodded her and said, I can wait. I understand. I would guess that my weight doesn’t help.
That is a bit of a problem but nothing I haven’t dealt with before and you are very pretty with those beautiful blue eyes with that raven black hair. I have had a lot of what I call larger women looking for husbands and I have found husbands for them all. None of them were as nice looking as you. Most are happily married now with families of their own, living out west. I hear from them regularly. Did you see all the thank you letters on the board outside?
Yes I did. Very impressive. It gives me hope.
Now, may I ask why you have come to me? Did someone recommend me and my services?
"My mom told me to come and see you. She is sure I will never find a husband and she reminds me of that every day. Truthfully, I would be glad to go out west without a husband -- just to get away from her
