Synopsis: A woman arrives at her fiancé’s ranch in California, but he’s nowhere to be seen. She decides that a walk along a path to the woods will clear her head but once into the forest, she encounters a Native American man, immediately runs off, and gets lost. She is found but encounters her fiancé for the first time and finds his moodiness unnerving and it’s then that she wonders if she will every get to marry him.
Hannah struggled with her luggage as she stepped off the train into the warm California night and onto the wooden platform.
The five day long train ride had been more tiresome than the seven-day ocean crossing, and what she wanted to see more than anything at the moment was a friendly face and a bed. Not necessary in that order. Pregnancy was very tiring and two weeks of travel over sea and land did nothing to help that. She had mistakenly thought that the long trip would be restful. Her friends in London had assured her of that. She would be sending them a nastily worded letter.
Having memorized the photograph of her husband to be, she searched the faces of the people waiting on the platform. She did not see him. Had he forgotten? Was he a forgetful person? No matter. Her deceased husband had been forgetful and she had learned to live with that particular character defect. Perhaps her new fiancé was just plain rude and inconsiderate.
That was a defect with which she could not abide.
She dragged her bag to the nearest bench and sat and waited; and waited. She was so tired and felt very unsteady after five days of the rocking of the train. She wondered if anyone would take offense if she curled up right here and had a little lie down. She smiled at the thought of Joe finding her asleep. No, she could wait – awake and alert lest he arrive. She was glad to be at journey’s end and glad she no longer had to keep repeating her story to every stranger who struck up an acquaintance with her. She could not understand why anyone would find her story interesting, but they did.
They insisted on asking questions, tiring and intrusive questions, questions that no self-respecting citizen of England would have had the audacity to ask. However, she was in America now and things were different, people were different. They all seemed rather loud and rude.
As she watched the crowd of people dwindle, she struggled to remember why she had chosen this particular outpost of America to be her destination. The climate had certainly been a draw and it would be nice to see the sun on a regular basis. However, the balmy breezes had not been the primary reason, the motivating factor had been Joe. It was strange to think that one could become attracted to another using Her Majesty’s Postal Service, but here she was.
In his letters, Joe came across as a decent, hardworking and caring man. As her William had been. She had detected nuances of William in Joe. That was the reason. She was looking to replace William. Not the soundest of foundations upon which to build a lasting relationship but she knew of many happy couples whose marriages had been founded on a lot less.
She had ignored admonishments from her friends regarding her impetuous behavior and similarly,
