Night and Day - Marcia Ambris
CHAPTER 1
The elevator door opened on the sixth floor of the health plaza, and out walked Amanda Garcia. For the first time in four years, she was following the advice of her family and in-laws to move on and make a new life for herself and her son, Antonio.
My husband would have loved that too, she thought, smiling, as she walked down the hall.
She always loved to admire the beautiful paintings and colors on the walls, but this morning, her mind was elsewhere. Her thoughts were preoccupied as she recalled her first move. It was a difficult one she had to make. She had moved out of the home in which she had shared a happy and short marriage. She suddenly grew sad as she remembered all the planning and the promises that were left unfulfilled. Her thoughts drifted back to her new house, which she spent all weekend trying to organize and decorated. This brought a determined smile to her face.
Good morning, Judy,
Amanda greeted, smiling to the redhead sitting behind the desk busy checking her makeup.
The lady looked up at her boss who was coming toward her. Smiling, Judy replied, And good morning to you. You seem cheerful this morning. Did something happen over the weekend that I should know about?
Don’t get your hopes up too high,
Amanda answered, knowing what Judy was thinking about. I’ve just finished decorating most of my new house and am very proud of myself, I must say.
Oh,
Judy said, sounding disappointed. Amanda, when are you going to—
But Amanda did not let her finish. No matter how fond she was of her secretary, she was tired of their usual argument. Judy, please don’t let us start this again. You know what my answer is about that,
she said, smiling down at Judy. She did not give Judy much time to argue as she continued in her businesslike tone, Oh, by the way, there is a Mr. Chris Turner who’s supposed to be here this morning at ten o’clock for an interview. Please send him in when he gets here, will you?
With that, she went into her office.
Judy shook her head, watching her boss leaving. She had known Amanda for seven years now. During those years, she had seen her happily married at the young age of eighteen and, at twenty, grieved for her husband who was killed in a plane crash. After being married for two years, he left her with a part of him—a one-year-old son who now turned five. Antonio, named after his father, was a spitting image of him. Not only did he inherit his curly black hair, his Spaniard bone structure, and his smile, Antonio also inherited his mother’s dimples and chocolate-brown eyes.
The marriage was forbidden at first by Antonio’s father because they were Hispanic and Amanda was black, but soon after meeting and getting to know her, the families were impressed. Not only was Amanda an attractive woman with a slender body, shoulder-length hair, and a shape of a model at five-six but she was also an intelligent and very lovable person. Soon it was a marriage made in heaven.
Now, four years later, she still grieved and spent all her time alone with her son, Antonio. Shaking her head again, Judy murmured, I wish she would just wake up and take a good look at the world around her.
Excuse me,
said a husky male voice.
Bringing her back from her thoughts, she looked up and came face-to-face with an attractive, tanned, well-built male, about thirty to thirty-five give or take, standing in front of her desk. He had dark-blond hair and laughing hazel eyes, which were looking down at her. He seemed amused by her reaction, knowing that he had not only interrupted her from whatever she was thinking but also startled her by suddenly finding a man in front of her.
My name is Chris Turner, and I have an appointment with Mrs. Garcia. Is she in?
Ah yes, go right in. She’s expecting you,
Judy answered as she stared at him walking across to her boss’s door. At the age of thirty-eight, Judy had been out there in the world and known an attractive man when she saw one, and by golly, Mr. Turner was certainly one attractive man.
CHAPTER 2
Amanda was standing on a stool busy sorting out some files that she did not hear Chris knock or enter the room. After hearing no reply, he entered the room to see a young woman busily looking through some files. He decided not to interrupt her but let his glance sweep around the office. After a while, he decided he liked it. It appeared to be comfortable and attractive, just like the lady he was staring at, whose back was in front of him at the very moment. Her hair was stylishly rolled on top of her head, held with a pin of some sort. Her tailored suit jacket was discarded and was resting on the back of the chair. She was wearing a white silk blouse with a knee-length black skirt, which showed off her curves. She had great legs too, he noticed. He was surprised and amused that as he glanced down her sheer legs, she was standing barefoot on tiptoe. He was also surprised that he had the urge of going over and lifting her up in his arms and kissing her. He had never let race or color stop him before. Once he was attracted to her, nothing else matters. What shocked him was that he had never felt this way about a married woman before until now. He was always dead set against men who were involved with married women. I’m still against it, and I’m not about to change now,
he reminded himself softly. He then smiled as he saw her struggling with the files and muttering something under her breath.
Amanda, sensing someone in the room, thinking that it was Judy, asked, Did Mr. Turner arrive as yet?
Well, I’m here as a matter of fact,
Chris answered and could have hit himself when she spun around by surprise and almost fell. Thank goodness he was near enough to catch her hands to steady her. Her hands seemed small and dainty and even a little darker than his tanned complexion. He then released her, but not before feeling an electric bolt shot through
