    About the Author

    The Chocolate Birthday

My computer had just shut down when my phone beeped with a text message alert. I looked at the screen and smiled.

    R U on the way?

It was from Michael. We’d been together for over two years, and the smallest message from him still made my heart thump a little bit faster.

I picked up the phone, leaned back in my chair, and was just about to thumb in a reply when Stacie poked her head into my office. She had her jacket on and a small purse hanging over one shoulder.

Happy birthday, Tom, she said with a big smile. Then she added, Again, with a little laugh.

I nodded and answered, Thank you. Again.

There was something in her hand, and she held it out to me.

We demolished the cake, but there was quite a bit of hummus left. I thought you might want to take it home with you.

Actually, we didn’t demolish the cake. I had one piece, the first piece, and my co-workers went after the rest like sharks going after a wounded seal. Still, it was nice of her to bring me the leftover hummus. I really loved that stuff.

I reached out, took the bowl from her hand, and thanked her. The phone was still in my other hand. I really wanted to get a reply in and head out.

I knew it wasn’t going to be that easy when Stacie said, Listen, I was wondering. If you don’t have any plans for tonight, or at least right away, maybe I could buy you a drink? There’s a nice little place a couple blocks away. We could walk there. Maybe we could get to know each other better.

I hesitated, and I knew she could see it on my face that something was wrong. It was amazing how fast she backpedaled. Or if you already have plans it’s okay. Or, I mean, if you don’t really want to have a drink with me it’s okay. We don’t really know each other that well or anything.

For just a split second the old habits wanted to take over, and I almost lied to stay in the closet. Back in the day, I would have invented a girlfriend who was waiting for me at a restaurant across town. I’d only been working for the company a few weeks, and no one had really asked me about my personal life.

Instead, I smiled and went for the truth. Sorry, I’ve got a guy waiting for me at home.

She laughed and said, That’s okay, I can give you a rain check.

I just looked at her, and she realized that I didn’t mean a buddy. A red flush started at the collar of her yellow checked sweater and visibly crept up her face until it met her hairline. It was kind of amazing. The only time I’d see a blush like that was in a cartoon. I didn’t know people could do it for real.

She started to stammer, Oh- you meant- I’m sorry-

I smiled and said, It’s okay.

It’s just that, you don’t seem, I mean, you don’t… She realized she was just making it worse for herself and tapered off.

It’s okay, I said again. You can’t always tell. You seem really nice, and if you’d like to grab a drink sometime as friends that would be cool.

My phone beeped again, and I glanced down at the screen. Wassup? Michael inquired.

In fact, I said, that’s my man right now wondering where I am.

    She nodded and backed away
