    Mermaid's Duet - Dean Chills

    Ocean Sailing

    by H. K. Kiting

    ––––––––

Lara floated in the waves with her head tilted back, eyes closed, completely relaxed. The gentle motion of the water helped soothe the anxiety that she was feeling. Her hair spread out behind her in a golden fan, catching the light and sparkling. Her nipples were wet, above the waterline, and hardening in the light breeze that was blowing. She was so buoyant that she barely had to move her arms or her tail to maintain her position on the surface.

    What can I do?

The same question kept turning over and over in her mind. She was of age now, ready to bear a child, and desiring it with a hunger that kept her awake at night.

Unfortunately, something was wrong with her that just didn’t allow her to accept the way things were. She didn’t want to share, despite it being the way of her people. Only one out of twenty births was a boy child. When that child grew up into a merman, he was expected to take at least a dozen mates.

One of the men-folk, Inicth, was strong and handsome, and he had made it clear that he had wanted her. Unfortunately, he also wanted fifteen of her sister-cousins.

She had refused his advances and swam away, her tears mixing with the ocean. Now she floated, wondering if she should just set out on her own.

Maybe, somewhere in the width of the waters, she might meet a merman from another clan wandering alone. He turned his back on the way of the people as well because he longed for a single mate. They would fall in love, spawning a hundred children and starting a clan of their own. She would have an equal number of males and females, forever changing the way of life.

Lara shook her head, casting aside the fantasy. She might as well hope for one of the stars to come down from the sky and sing to her.

She opened her eyes and lifted her head, alerted by a noise. It wasn’t a sound of the ocean. It was an artificial thing, something hollow that was thumping and scraping. She put her head underwater and strained her hearing to the maximum.

There was something moving through the water. It was large and skimming along the surface. The sound was something like dolphin skin whisking along, but it wasn’t as smooth or efficient. She recognized it at once. It was a boat.

As she hovered below the surface, a new idea began to form in her mind. If she couldn’t have one of her own kind for her beloved, perhaps she could have one of the surface men. There were legends and stories of the two races mixing. The endings weren’t often happy ones, but some of them were. It was at least an idea worth exploring.

Lara swam in the direction of the sound, pushing with powerful strokes from her tail. She glided effortlessly through the water with her slim, streamlined body.

Within a few minutes she could see the boat ahead. It was heading parallel to her, going off toward her right. She pursued and could see the white underbelly of it with its artificial fin sticking out from the bottom.

Lara was puzzled by the relative silence of this boat.  She’d only seen a few in her young life, and they all had a churning wheel underwater
