    Demonic Lust - Dean Chills

    Dealing with the Demon

    by Dean Chills

I don't usually stop at garage sales, but when I do, I think ahead. My sister's birthday is next month, and I know she likes stuff with pentagrams. She played around with being a Wiccan a few years ago, but gave up when she decided she didn't believe any of it. Still, she had bought a bunch of equipment with the pentagram on it at the time and just sort of kept it up even after she'd given up on the magical stuff.

The box I found was a wooden cube, about a foot square. It had a latch, but the lady at the garage sale said she'd never had a key for it, and that was why she was selling it. I didn't think Sarah would care about the insides of the box; she'd just put it out for decoration. I could shake the box and tell it was empty anyway. No rattling sounds at all. I gave the lady the five dollars she was asking and sat it carefully in the trunk of my car. Then I went to the grocery and did my other errands for the day. I almost left it in the trunk when I unloaded the food later, but then I decided it would just take up trunk space for the next month if I didn't unload it too.

I left it in the kitchen atop the dishwasher and went in the other room to watch TV. The movie I watched turned out to be a sappy happily-ever-after romantic thing that I only finished because I wasn't ready for bed yet. If romances ever turned out like the one in the show, I'd never encountered anyone who had experienced it. I'd gone on a blind date with Pete last September, and that hadn't gone anywhere after the second date. I got on the dating websites once in a while, but those guys were all fakes and liars— I needed a man who was real or at least truthful about what he was.

The movie on TV ended, and I clicked off the remote. I did my nightly routine and headed for the bedroom. I climbed in under the sheets, alone again, and closed my eyes.

Around midnight, I heard noises. I have a basement apartment, so there isn't a back door. The front door had four locks on it, and anyone breaking in would have had to smash the door down. There was no way there was someone in the apartment with me, but it sure sounded like someone was in the kitchen. Maybe the refrigerator was off-balance and rattling or something. After a few minutes, it stopped. I went back to sleep, hoping the food in the fridge wasn't going to spoil before morning.

The next morning I got up and headed into the kitchen, expecting to find that my refrigerator had died overnight. Nope— it was chugging right along. The only thing I found out of place was that big wooden box. It had popped open during the night. I figured the heat from the dishwasher had warmed the air inside, forcing the lid open. No great mystery there.

There was something odd though. Inside the box was a small metal object. I didn't recognize what it was at first, but upon closer examination, I could see it was a tea infuser. It was a silver ball with a small chain hanging from a loop in the top. There was also a piece of paper with some kind of recipe on it. I could understand how the recipe was silent when I shook the box, but that infuser should have rattled around in there for sure. I don't know; maybe it was glued down or something. Whatever— the box was open, and the infuser was sitting loose inside.

I made coffee as usual, and read the paper while the coffeepot did its thing. I read the recipe from the box. It just took normal tea, but there was a special chant you were supposed to read while the tea steeped. The words above the recipe said simply, What You Need. Considering the pentagram on the outside of the box, I assumed this was some kind of silly Spell like my sister used to do, and dropped it back in the box. It did get me thinking though. What did I need? If there were such a thing, what would I want?

I went through my day as usual, filing orders and answering the phone. I'm a receptionist, but some days things are
