Coleen sighed as she looked around Hashbrown Hut, scanning tables for customers. There were a couple of middle-aged men who were finishing up their hamburgers and chili, and they would be leaving soon. These guys came in about once a week, usually ordered the same thing, and each left a two-dollar tip; not bad for an easy table. She suspected they were a gay couple, but she’d learned long ago not to ask. There was no one else here other than Stan the cook. It was slow even for a Wednesday night.

She lazily looked away from the newspaper she was reading and gazed out the window. The moon was full and bright tonight, giving the nearly empty parking lot a bright glow. Every minute or so, a car would drive by, its tail lights sometimes flashing at the nearby red light, sometimes speeding through the green ones. None of them turned in.

She didn’t mind having an easy evening once in a while, but she’d volunteered for the late shift because she had visions of drunks coming
