      Another scorching Houston summer day was nearly at an end. Mark wiped his forehead for the five hundredth time today, using the sweat-soaked plaid handkerchief he carried in his back pocket. His bare chest gleamed in the sunlight, shining from the day’s accumulated perspiration. He glanced at the other men on his team, all shirtless as well except for Ramone, the shift supervisor. They’d gotten the sidewalk paved on schedule, but it had been a hot one today, even moreso than usual.

      Mark looked at his watch: quitting time. He started stowing his shovel and other tools into the road crew truck with the other men. People walked up and down the sidewalk behind him, and he could make out snippets of conversation:

      Must be break time. Your tax dollars at work.

      None of them actually working at all.

      Glad I work indoors.

      "That one is hot!"

      I used to be in that kind of shape.
